My local gun shop called me today to let me know they just got one of these in. A couple of things I would like to learn before going to see it. What is Photo Engraving and Coin Finish with Hardening? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Coin finish refers to bright or high polish in the white ....not to be confused with Nickel

I suppose one could say polished SS is a mimic of coin finish  w/ heat treatment
I believe photo engraving is an acid etching using a acid resistant film template.

course , I thought maybe I'd been wrong before, turn out I was mistaken though

Ok that makes sense on both questions but now another quandary to the mix. Taylor's and Cimarron show what appears the same revolver, same engraving on them. Only difference I see is grips. Taylor's calls their s a Cattleman and Cimarron a Frontier. Taylor's is about $150 more than Cimarron. Taylor's that much better?

Cattleman is Uberti's nomenclature

Cimarron uses "Frontier" on their imported Pietta

Both SAA clone's , not the same gun however

I was under the impression that Uberti made revolvers for both Cimarron ond Taylor's. All I have for comparison is pictures from both sites and they have the same engraving and finish. The only difference is the grip. I will have to look further into this. I called my dealer and he was mistaken as the revolver he has came from Cimarron not Taylor's. Must be some subtle differences I am not catching. Going to look the Frontier over tomorrow. Thanks for the help Major.

Well I looked at both Taylor's and Cimarron sites to compare the two revolvers. Upon closer inspection I see that the engraving is a little different on them. Taylor's looks to be engraved deeper and a little more coverage. Actually I prefer the Taylor's model of the two. Still going to look at Cimarrons to hold it, fondle it and drool.

I have a pair of Taylors engraved. Old Top likes to call them my scratched up guns. The Taylors are photo/lazer engraved. ythen they were chased by hand to make them look more real. These have been my main match guns for about 10 years

also enclosing a shor of emf engraved GW2. they look very much like the original GW's owned by JohnWayne and used in the Shootist

they are both great shooters

I've been researching this same gun.  I haven't found a Cimmaron engraved 1873 but I was told by a local gun dealer that the Taylor & Co.  is a Pietta and about $350 less than the Uberti engraved Stainless Steel 1873 Cattleman.

I'm new to this site and to the CAS but am wanting to learn.  I currently  have a Uberti 1875 Outlaw in .45 Colt.

Very late to this post but thought it would benefit those interested to see better quality photos of the actual Taylors & Company SAA.

Notice how deep the hand chased work makes the engraving look. It is stamped A. Uberti on the bottom of the barrel.

These are great, who offered the reblued one?

Snake Oil

I believe EMF has a blued engraved one...

I would like to find another one that matches mine...

The Taylors and Company version is not just photo etched, but they have a skilled engraver chase and deepen the design, which is why they are more expensive. I have both and the one from Pietta is not as deeply engraved.

Laser engraving has greatly improved, but its still clearly not equal to the real thing.  That's okay, because these are replica firearms.  A brand new fully engraved Colt will run you 20 grand, or more.  These guns give us the look and feel at an approachable price.  For that I think they're great.  I shot the living snot out of a fully engraved Uberti and loved every minute of it.

....  A brand new fully engraved Colt will run you about 20 grand, or more. ...

Uh, no.  A Colt costs around 2 grand if you can find one, and a full engraving job from a master engraver varies but can be had for 2 or 3 grand.

A Colt made in 1880 and fully engraved at the time by Colt might run 20 grand.

But yeah, I shoot the heck out of engraved Uberti conversions and love every minute of that as well!

I'm talking about a FACTORY engraved Colt.  Take a trip over to their website, and if you nose around you'll see their form for a custom SAA or 1911, and there you will find pricing...but make sure you're wearing your seatbelt.
