I recently acquired a 1873 Winchester in 32-20. The ser. number is from 1885. The barrel has been cut off to 20" and the magazine is 4" shorter. I was told this rifle may have been used as a scout rifle. The cocking handle locking screw has also been removed and replaced with a brass plug. This modification leads me to think the rifle may have been used in a combat situation and done to prevent the lever being locked when needed. The modifications were made by someone who knew what to do as the barrel has been crowned. The rifle has good patina and the wood is in great shape. Anyone having any info on this modification ?  I'm also waiting on info from the Cody Museum about the rifle.
