Does anyone use the Quickloader program to load 56-50 rounds and would you mind sharing your loading parameters?  I intend on using the Lyman mold number 515139 for a 340 grain bullet.

Thanks in advance,

Smitty

my load for an original Burnside carbine  56 50 is:
Starline brass, annealed, primer pocket uniformed, and deburred. only to the new cases

   34 grains of 2f,  350 lyman mould, 20 to 1 cast.  soft.
hand lubed with SPG.  I made a short brass pipe and push the bullets through after lubing to clean them up.
A short piece of dowel works great.
a hard card wad, then two newspaper wads under bullet.  The two NP wads made sure the card comes off
after firing.  check in front to make sure this is happening.  It it sticks to the bullet, you'll get NO accuracy.
Some will even ride downrange to the 50 yard mark.  2 NP wads prevent this.
   Reg pistol primer

shoots into 2 inches at 50 yds consistently.
I'm now using a Blakeslee loading box, and it works very well.

Fascinating, Ken:
Am curious, please:
Since you aren't sizing, what is the as-cast bullet diameter vs. bore diameter?
Are you full length resizing and with what dies, please?
Thanks,
Kevin
Pay attention to that soft voice in your head.

Does the OP mean the "QUICKLOAD" Program ?

If so, it does have provisions for the 56-50 cartridge, but "parameters"are what you input for various powders/projectiles,etc

Yes, QuickLoad.  The 'er' and the 'brain' didn't match up.

I found it the cartridge file finally, and took a bullet I cast and derived the other measurements.  I'm leaning toward IMR 4227 powder, but it can't be found locally.

I bought Starline brass and have the Lyman molds, Winchester WLR primers, so I am almost there...

Thanks Ken, I am using the hard card wad, but will add the 2 NP wads in the next round of bullets. I am using 35 grains of 2F and will cut back a gram for the wads. Interesting note that the NP will help with accuracy.

Hey Kevin, sorry I'm late getting back....been shovlin' snow on Cape Cod every day;

my as cast is 515 from the mold.   I use about a 20 to 1 mix.  What I do is to hand lube with SPG< then I made a
piece of pipe =very close to bullet diameter.  I just push them through with a dowel and they clean up nice.
no sizing, just lubed.  The pipe pushes the lube in the grooves in case I miss some..
TV stuff...and it works.. I have a 515 die, but it shoots better not using it.  I think the die may distort the lead somewhat.
anyway, it works..the big thing is the two newspaper wads over the card wad.  I find that works very well in my Sharps, and other BP guns.  you have to keep the main wad from sticking to the bullet as it goes downrange. you can test this by not using the newspaper wads on a few, then go to the target 50 yds away, and you'll find a wads or two right there.
   good luck...Ken
