So, I am just about to pick up my 2nd Shiloh and I was thinking about making a wagon box to hold them.  I have seen a number of new made ones and they tend to be lovely oak things with lovely dovetails, fancy brass hardware and all kinds of fiddly knobs and such...none of which looks very authentic.

I have done some searching for photos of period sharps wagon boxes and they do show up.  The one I like best so far is on page 157 of Guns of the American West by Joeph G. Rosa.  The caption says that its from the Charles R. Suydam collection and there are photos of the gun in it and a number of period bits that were in it (as best as I can tell from the iffy captions) including a period mold, and cartridge belt.  It is supposed to be an original ,ca. 1870s and is a 2 rifle box where the guns go in vertically from the top (rather than on their side as is traditional in a single long gun case).  Sorry to say, the photo is kind of dark and does not show a number of the pertinent details (its taken looking down at the open box with 1 rifle in it).  What you can see is that it does not use dove tails (I cant easily explain why but it is clear that it does not even from the top).   The top and bottom appear to be a planks that overhang the sides with a kind of molding planed on all four sides.   It has three hinges and two clasps.  But as I say, the photo is a bit dark and hard to see details in.

So, does anyone have other photos of this or any other documented period wood wagon box for sharps rifles?    I have seen some period ones covered in buffalo hide, but that is not the type I am after.

Thanks
