Looking for ideas for doing a rig for a pair of 1858 Rems...in black

I want a pseudo US Cav or military style holster rig but w/o the flaps.

No so much a slim jim but as much as a "western" styile.

Like what triple K does for theirs...(they just don't offer it in black)

Here are my last two ideas (sorry Nolan Sackett).  I was writing fast and didn't finish my sentence.  I stole these two pictures from Nolan Sackett because I really admire his work.  It is excellent top notch stuff!  In black leather they would look excellent with a 1858 Remington stuffed inside.  I probably could never reproduce anything close to him.

That old 2nd Texas rig is really cool.  With maybe a wider belt (2 1/2"), and a distressed black leather finish, that would look a lot like an old military rig converted to civilian use after the civil war.  Especially with 1858's.

This looks similar to a holster sold by Cabellas.  Ive had several pards bring them to me wanting them 'Fixed', they bleed oil terribly and have no body.  When you here people wanting to know how to stiffen leather, this is the holster that is most often being referred to.  The design looks close to an early Mexican Loop, when they still had lots of California left in them.  The skirtless design with attached loop is less orriginal looking but most Slim Jim patterns would adapt easily to this style.

I used one of those Cabela's holster for about a year and a half.  It worked out well for me for a $12 investment at the time.  They had them in black at one point in time.  You could always redye them black.  Now I think they are up to $16.

What I would like to do is get them in black along with a black US belt and cartridge holder...
(for a US Cav outfit idea I have...)

How would I go about turning "brown" into "black"? or is there a patern I could get that would approximate it?

You can always dye them black, but the black would probably have a brown tint to it. If you can get a pattern for a military flap holster you  could make them without the flap.

All you would need to do is get Black Dye, Deglazer, and wool dabers (I believe).  If you look around at S & S Firearms, Dixie Gun Works, Track of the Wolf, Ebay, etc. you could acquire the belt, holsters, and cartridge box.  I don't know for $14 how thick the leather will be but I would imagine it would work out.  Like I said the black one I used to own did until I sold it with some other holsters on ebay.  Your tastes in rigs follows mine.

The holster you pictured is available in black through Wahmaker, and it is only about $17, you can check that out.   I bought two for my 58s and am happy with them.

Dakota-  I just got a pair of holsters from Springfield Slim of Whyte Leather Works and they are fabulous!

One was made for my 5 1/2" barrel Remington,  but I know he can make it for a long barrel Remington too.  They run in the $50 range each and are well worth the few extra dollars.

I have used the holster pictured above since I started shooting about three years ago. It worked great and did not have any problems with bleeding. I have replaced it and my other cross draw holster with a nice pair of slim jims. Only because the go nice with my Open Top and RM Army.
