Looking at the book Sir Charles linked to, most of those tractors could go about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 miles an hour. Of all the WW1 tanks I've seen, this one looks to be one of the worst. I sure wouldn't want to be the infantry that was assigned to be close to an artillery magnet like that.  But it'd sure be cool to have one, anyway.

I had another thought looking at it, they called it a "tracklayer" But maybe they should have called it a "Land Monitor" Since it looks a lot like a Monitor ship.

The photo is of a "sham battle' on April 7, 1917 at San Leandro. The soldiers are from the coast artillery. It was claimed that the speed of this machine was six times that of the contemporary British tanks. Mr. Best declined to offer it to the military. (see page 297 of the google book link)

Six times faster? I didn't read that far, just saw the speed of some of the other crawlers they made. Must have geared it up a bit for the "tank" role.

I don't know what's scarier: that we know all this stuff, or that we think we could build one . . .
Think?
Oh, I'm pretty sure I could. It'd have to have a different tractor under it and it would look a little different, but for what we'd do with it it'd be pretty close.

The only thing is, I'm pretty sure it's out of our time period. If we allow it we'll have to start allowing gas masks and steel helmets.

I have a good friend who is in the early stages of drafting plans for one of these. I just hope he does it before we get to old to put together the kits for fielding it.

I believe I am that friend to which you are referring!

We are looking for an old skid steer to use as the basis for ours. We have raised some funds for the project but cannot fins an old skid steer anyone is willing to donate and or sell cheaply. Please spread the word! If  you know someone with one they might be willing to part with please let me know.

One that does not run and is good for just scrap will bring $400 or so by the pound.   Ltl brother got $500 for his that leaked, needed new tires and had a bad engine.

We are hoping to find one in bad shape that runs. The hydraulics can be shot and it can be beat to hell but if it is a skid steer that moves from place to place we may be able to work with it.

We have collected a lot of metal and other materials for the project and we currently have about $1000 in the tank fund from selling our WWI trench armour and as part of our prize for winning first place display at this year's Military History Fest.

Any help would be great!

Just finish the metal with a brass finish, put in lots of rivets and exposed gears, and call it "steampunk".  Maybe run the diesel rich so it smokes like a steam engine - Dr. Bob would love it.

Well, you got that Farmall just sitting down by your house, just cover it with some sheet metal and you're good to go!

I saw an episode of Classic Tractor fever where they had a couple of tractors made up to look like tanks.
