OK.  We load BP and Subs by Volume, not Weight.  But ..... After I dump enough explosive stuff into a case to reach the base of the bullet, I then dump the explosive stuff into my beam scale to see what it weighs.  OK!   The approved load weighs x and such, so I set my Dillion to throw a consistent x and such charge.  So now I'm loading by weight.
If I'm loading by weight of charge thrown by my powder measure, how can I be loading by volume when the volume works out to be so much weight which I set my measure too.

Yer usin' a volume measure to load, not a scale.  Finding the real volume using a scale is a lab thing.  Using that volume for reloading is a reloading thing.  Of course, you could get the same results by weighing each and every charge.  Painful, slow but same results.

Using the "other" powder and modern hyper velocity rounds loaded to 55,000 psi and beyond, I weigh all my charges.  That said, I do a similar thing to what you said to set up my black powder charge system when I'm reloading black powder.  That said, I don't think there's much benefit from precision weighing black powder to the nearest 0.1 grain.

It's one of the great mysteries of life.

Volumetric measuring of BP came about during the early days of the front stuffers.  You couldn't carry a scale around with you to measure out your powder while in the field hunting the wily wild turkey, so a deer antler spike, or wood dowel was bored out to accommodate a weighed out amount of powder.  The volumetric measures then became the method measuring powder.  They are a nominal approximation of a scale weighed quantity of BP.  Various factors (f value, manufacturer, either real NBP or sub) affect he actual weight of a given volumetric charge.

For example; The volumetric measure I use for my target loads in a .54 cal Tryon rifle is a 7/16 inch hole drilled 1 3/4 inch into an elk antler tip.  Using the brass adjustable volumetric measure I have, it measures out between 50 and 55 grains of ffg Goex (depending on if it is under or over full).  When I weigh the powder on a scale, it is 59.7 grains.  Doing the same thing with Grafs powder, it weighs out to 57.2 grains.

I shoot Frontiersman in SASS.  Using the spout on my flask, it is marked 21 grains. When I weigh a charge from it, it weighs out to 22.5 grains.

Well, I know/knew all that.  And I agree, measuring BP to 0.1Gr is kind of ........ dumb.  But .......... it's winter and too cold to go out and play and the board has been real quiet and I was blared with the board and just thought I'd start some STUFF.
'Specially since we actually do measure by weight.  After we determine the volume that corresponds to the weight.

Ha ha He he .. The're comming to take me away ha ha.

Soooo! If I count the grains I have less, and if they are in volume, I have more. Got it !

That was easy, now back to the looney bin. ;D ::) :D ;)

Are I a dumb A$$, or what.

Noz

If you use any type of mechanical powder measure you are using volumetric measurements.  They are, of course, representative of a weighed charge.

So ....... Pour out an amount of 2f, and I count out 52 lil grains.  I now have "52 Grains" of 2f and it isn't enough powder to do much more than make a little smoke.  52 Grains by volume. :o.   Right??

Thing is Cuts, pickin fly poop out of Holy Black hurts my eyes.  So, I just shoot the poop. . . :)

Still a lot of winter left.  8)

What's next ........  ::)

I'm making myself a bowl of popcorn and pulling up a chair.

Time to watch the 2015 season of the volume verses weight debate.

BTW, I know exactly how much power I put in mine  ;)
