Deer are easy to kill with a .44 C&B. You just have to hit them in the right spot is all. I used 30gr BP @ 30 yards with an 1860 army.  Ka-thump, down she went, probably 140lbs or so field dressed. No big deal really. Bullet passed all the way through, heart shot.

Without starting a new thread, can you tell me which nipple wrench you recommend for my revolver?...

make your own.

rifle

rdstrain49, what type socket is that? Seems long. Speakin nipple wrenchs is one thing and using anti-seize grease on the threads sorta goes along with nipples wrenches. I've been using a lil of that on the cones/nipples threads from time to time. I like to make sure the nipples are snug not over tighten them.

Roosterman, Can't argue with success I guess. Yer a good shot it seems and good hunter enough to get close. I read an article a long ways back bout huntin deer with a Remington 58 revolver. The author recommended 30 yards max distance. I thunk the author used 35gr. Pyrodex pistol powder and the ball. Pyrodex compresses easy a good ways to up the powder charge.

I wouldn't know much bout huntin javilina.

I tend to keep things simple and I'm more a lucky hunter than a skilled hunter, although I can shoot a colt revolver accurately.I find it much more satisfying to shoot a deer with a C&B revolver than a bow, besides, my shoulder is destroyed and I can't pull a bow anymore. We can carry a muzzleloading hand gun as well as a long gun in iowa during ML season. I just got lucky and had a doe stumble along close enough for a shot. That was the last deer I got, two year dry spell now. Got to build up a ML rifle this year with a scope, can't see open iron rifle sights anymore but no problem with a pistol.
javelina? I think that's something they throw in the olympics....

I like this thread. Some speak of ethical hunting with a larger revolver, some speakof success with the 1860 revolver fer javelina and deer, some about eyes and shoulders(my own predicament to overcome) and a whole spectrum of opinions.

Huntin and gettin lucky? Lucky to me is doin the right thing at the right time so luck comes to fruition.

Then ya's have it over the nea's. The venerable Colt 1860 rmy can be used to hunt javelina and deer.

I've been eye'n the newer Malcohm type scope fer the Winchester(shorter like 18 inches) Montana Vintage Arms is sellin since I thunk it could be alright on the Hawken I hunt with.  So I could see better. A peep sight helps me a good bit so I may take the rear sight off the Hawken and use one of the peeps like a Lyman type. I know if I don't want something original looking a regular rifle scope water proof and all will work fer me some day.
I can still shoot to 100 paces using the "aim with the right fuzz" system". :-[    A peep sight is lsorta like the Merit Diopter that sticks to yer glasses and Merrit has a new rear sight that is like a peep Meritt dioper sight mounted on the rifle. I have to lookinto that. Cheaper then a scope.
I do see a pistol sight better so maybe my Vaquero(the big one) will be put to use.  Maybe a cap&baller revolver too. I have the Army and the Dragoon and the Walker. I shoot 45gr. FFFg in the Walker and 40gr. FFFg in the Dragoon and 25-28gr. in the Army. I have no doubbt the Walker will do the job within it's max range. What's that? I'd stay inside 50 paces and less ifin the buck is a real big one. The 1860 Army? Inside 30 paces.

I'd bet a Malcolm scope would fit jes right onna Walker.   :D
