Been asked by a friend to make a holster for his Model 29 target version. Since I am not able to have the piece in hand, I am curious if anyone here may have a pattern that the could share with me? My friend is going in for brain surgery over the holidays, so I would like to get this knocked out for him as a gift.

Thanks!

I am assuming this is a S&W model 29 you said it is target version is it the 6" barrel then? I have a couple of patterns that will work for the S&W Model 29. However you will not be able to mold or shape the holster without the gun. WHen I get an order for a gun I cannot get or a mold I cannot get. I get a good side profile picture of the gun then enlarge it to ill the barrel is full size (all the other measurements will follow. I then use the picture as the pattern and cut the shape out of 1 x 6 pine. For width of the frame and the diameter of the cylinder I ask for that from the customer. I use a dowell for the cylinder and wrap duct tape around to get exact diameter. This will work for general shaping. If you want detail molding you can add detail to it with a file and a dremel. If you have a few basic tools it only take about a half hour to build a basic frame and cylinder. It would also help you to know the approximate age of the model 29. It was first being manufactured in .44mag in 1955. There have been many variation of the N frame and several variations of the target model that may affect fit.  Do you have a style of holster you wanted? Feel free to PM me.

I have a nickel 6 1/2" Smith & Wesson Model 29. They stopped making the 6 1/2" but they are out there. It was purchased in the early 70s. Target hammer, target trigger, ...........

As with SlowHand Bob, I would glad to mail you the outline. The normal "place the handgun upside down on the center line and roll to one side" outline.

Grenadier, . . . I was faced with a similar situation a couple years ago, . . . made a wooden "29" and made the holster with it.

It did not of course have a lot of detail molding, . . . but my customer was just flat dab happy with the holster as it came out.

I'd be more than happy to loan it to you if you would like to use it.

May God bless,
Dwight
