Is the ejection cam spring loaded?  I think the answer is 'yes', so next part of the question, where can I get a replacement spring/assembly?

Please tell me what the ejection cam spring is on an 1860 Spencer.  If you are talking about the cartridge guide spring located in the back of the receiver, you can find them at Lodgewood or S&S Firearms.  If this is the spring that puts pressure on the extractor on a model 1865, you can find it at the same locations mentioned above.

I took it apart.  There is a lever on the front of the assembly block that is spring loaded.  I assume the lever ejects the spent cartridge, but in any case, the spring is broken.

Hi smittyc7

Any chance for a photo of the part you are describing in your post?

should have done that first Two Flints....

The lever has a spring wrapped around a shaft, both of which fit inside the block.  One end of the spring has rusted and snapped.  Used it over the weekend, and the spent cartridges would not eject, and I to take them out one by one.

Found it at S & S.  It is a EXTRACTOR COIL SPRING.

Thanks guys!

Herbert

Make sure you order the New Model extractor spring ,the extractor spring for the 1865 and 1867 model is different and will not fit.It should have extracted with the spring broken, the spring is only a return spring and should not affect extraction

smittyc7

Good advice, I jumped before checking and now am the proud owner of a spring that will not fit.  Hopefully S&S will have a return policy.

Question:  What vendors are likely to have the correct spring for sale?  Mine requires the end tabs to stick out one fits into the block, and one fits into the ejector tab.  Any listing of possible vendors available?

Dave

Herbert

These springs are hard to find,S&S may be able to help,or you could try to use the old one by bending a new tab one coil down the old spring,if this does not work any good gunsmith could make you a new one so it would be a good plan to take measurments  and make a drawing of the old one before trying to modify it

Another potential source of parts is Ebay and gunbroker.com.  As much as I hate to encourage the part Nazi's to sell
Antique guns in pieces this is a source. As long as the market place rewards this nefarious activity it will continue.

I searched all over and have not found a spring, but what I did find was a gunsmith that made me a spring, based on the original.  I'll put the block back in tomorrow and give it a try.

Two Flints

Smittyc7,

Please a photo of what the gunsmith made for you, compared to the original also in a photo?

I looked at my 1860 and don't seem to have the Ejection Cam or Spring. These parts are from a later model Spencer that have been added to an 1860. Am I right in this analysis?

Herbert

Yes ,the parts are from a New Model Spencer with the short blade extractor

smittyc7

The gunsmith made two coils, the photo is of one of the new ones next to the original and it's broken piece.  That particular new one is just a bit too wide for the chamber it fits into, and the ejector blade didn't move freely.  The other one is in the block and it works fine.  I'll take it out and compare the two new ones to be sure, but I'm thinking the one in the photo probably has one wrap too many.
