Okay, from my last thread replies I switched to 3.4 cc instead of 4.3 and 1 once of shot instead of 11/8 oz in my 16 ga brass hulls.

These changes seem to produce a more harmonious outcome.

Next question.. by reducing powder and shot amounts I have reduced the total height of the load column. I glue my overshot card in so I don't need it at the top to crimp. I have seen load instructions advising to add wads to bring to the top of the hull.

Does it matter if the top of the load column is at the mouth of the hull or 1/2-3/4 inch below?

In a brass hull it does not matter.

Except when I use a gluegun.  There is a limit as to how far in the nose of the sticky end will go!

Sir Charles,

I know what you mean. I use a glue gun and couldn't go too much lower.

If your load package is too short for your glue gun, skip the glue.  Just shove three over shot cards down on top of the payload.  It works.

Hey Capt. Jeb,

You can also use something called sodium silicate or water glass.  I found some a few years ago on ebay.  You just paint it around the edge of your overshot wad and the edge of the brass hull.  When it dries it looks just like glass and will hold the wad in place.

Are you planning to be at Lenoir next Saturday?  I am planning to come down and I will be glad to bring you some to try.

If you want to try Sodium Silicate (waterglass), you don't have to look hard to find some if you know what to look for.

One thing to be aware of though...waterglass tends to crack over time, so loaded rounds should be shot say, within 6 months (+-) or so of loading.

I have used sodium silicate in the past. Got it off ebay, but with shipping was kind of spendy.

I ordered cushion wads and either ordered the wrong ones or was sent the wrong ones, anyway, they were lubed. That left a film on the hulls so that was how I started using a hot glue gun.

Lucky, weather looks good so I was planning on going. Hope to see you there.

Actually lubed cushion wads are a good thing. If your gonna glue, just wipe the case mouth with some alcohol.
