I have been reading about cleaning and conditioning leather on this Forum as I starting a project of cleaning and restoring a set of old saddle-bags.  I have found very favorable comments regarding OOVO and beeswax but never a comment regarding blending both OOVO and beeswax.  I blend them both with great success when making lube for black powder bullets why not leather conditioner?  Anyone with comments would be appreciated.  As a second question, anyone identify a maker with chess symbol knight and name of Doughty? Thanks for the advice and information.  Paledun

Looked more closely at the maker mark and the name is "Dougkty".  Sorry for the mis-spelling.  Paledun

http://skidmores.com/

trust me on this one  :)

+1, I have found Skidsmore leather Cream to be the best I've used as of yet, and it's very user friendly, all my leather work gets two coats of it when finished...

I use skidmores always. I have used EVOO for decades especially when I want to tan leather, I have never had it go rancid.

Red Cent

A lady at Zack White told me she dipped her product (belts, holsters) in hot melted beeswax.

Camano, will the Skidmore's serve as a sealer with dyed leather?

Red, I use skidmores as a finish coat and have not had any problems. I have been using Skidmores for about 4-5 years.

Mogorilla

I use a homemade three way blend.  Equal weights of bee's wax, extra virgin olive oil, and pure neatsfoot oil.   Heat just to melt the wax (careful if using open flames) and pour into containers.  I mix it a little as it cools.  Have used this for years on leather.   If the leather looks dull buff with a clean cloth.

Same here.

Skidmores also works good on motorcycle leather.

Special thanks go to Ten Wolves for putting me on to Sikdmore's many years ago.

I've never used Skidmore's, but believe it is all that has been posted about it by so many that it is indeed a fine product. Another to consider is one that I started to use back in the 90's, got away from, but have started using again is 'Montana Pitch Blend'. Used it for a number of years for hunting boots, holsters, belts, etc and it always worked 'top shelf'! Started using it again for all my leather items, including my work boots. I am a heavy equipment operator by trade and boots worn in the sometimes wet, muddy environment I work in takes a 'top shelf' leather conditioner. My Ol' Double H pointy toe cowboy type boots with fancy stitchin' have never been happier since using Montana Pitch Blend. Keeps em' soft and breathin'. No dry leather, sheds moisture from getting in, smells like leather dressin' should, and keeps em' from early retirement. Put my stamp of approval on the stuff.
As a side note, when possible I always wear a pair of Sevus/Lacrosse pair of two-buckle pointy toe rubber overshoes in wet/snowy weather to help in the preservation of my leather boots. A co-worker, known for not having all his electrons fully connected commented one day this spring about my pointy-toe leather boot and overshoes. He said "I don't know how you can stand to wear those pointed-toe boots, they would hurt my feet". I responded in one of my humor laden remarks that would have made Ol' Gus from Lonesome Dove proud, "Well, I've only got three toes on each foot, so they don't bother me so much". He responded in a apologizing manner, "Sorry, I didn't know that". Oh well, job site humor!---Sorry, but my computer skills don't allow me to attach the www.... website, but if ya type in 'Montana Pitch Blend' to Yahoo/Google, their website is there. Nice people to do business with. Yours, Crow Choker

Hi,

Skidmores is great stuff... talk about a family business; even the most lowly customer service person is a once or twice removed cousin ...

TTFN,
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...
