I have a Uberti 1873 carbine in .44-40.  When I extract the spent brass it only throws the brass out about 4 inches in the air.  I would like it to toss the brass with a little more force.  Is the cure just replacing the extractor?  Be kind I'm a newbie to the lever action.

You are confusing extraction and ejection.  Assuming your gun is in proper operating order, ejection is entirely dependent on how vigorously you operate the lever.  It is the carrier hitting the shell and knocking it loose from the extractor that causes the empties to eject.  Remember that 73s do not eject nearly as far as a 92 and some other common cowboy guns.  Ejection is affected by the tension on the extractor AND the little tab at the bottom of the bolt.  If that little tab is broken off or bent (VERY common on the Uberti 73s) it won't extract or eject very well.

I'd be very happy if that was all the further my 66 shucked my brass out, easier to find that way.  ;D

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

If you are using Remington Brass the rim is thicker than Winchester or starline . The extractor will hold the brass longer on ejection.
My one 73 Uberti Carbine 's extractor is tight and it will not eject Remington brass. The extractor just holds the case and jams the works. I do not use Remington brass in my 73 44WCF's.

Pettifogger,

If you had a broken tab, where would you get it fixed?

Thanks

Two more that can fix the tab.  Jim Bowie in California and Palo Verde in Arizona.
