Shot my first match today.  Overall was very pleased.  Had an issue with the 97 that I've had once or twice in practice.  The round extracts, but somehow during the ejection phase the round gets turned totally turned around in the chamber with the brass facing the chamber.  It only happened once today, on the first phase, but lost time clearing.

This continues to be a problem.  Put a new ejector in, the old one looked fine.  The new one didn't help.  Polished the chamber, just in case.  That didn't seem to help.  The left hand extractor looks fine.  Somehow, the empty round somehow flips completely around in the ejection port making even more difficult to clear.  When I rack the empty as hard as I can, the empty just barely makes it out the ejection port. with the empty landing right at my feet.

Since a new ejector didn't change anything and you are operating the slide with gusto I would tend to look for trouble with the left extractor and/or extractor spring.  Your mileage may vary.

Many ejection problems such as those you describe are caused by the left hand ejector.  Even if it "looks" fine it may still need adjustment.  The little spring built into the left hand extractor is frequently weak or broken.

Pettifogger, does the left hand extractor use a coil spring?  I have all of the parts available from Gunspartscorp, but do not see a separate spring for the left hand extractorm in the parts breakdown.  I just want to have everything before I start tearing into it.

The right hand extractor has a coil.  However, the left hand extractor does NOT.  That is part of the problem.  The extractor and its leaf spring are one piece.  If the spring is weak or breaks you either have to find a new left hand extractor (which is sometimes difficult) or depending on how much of the left leaf spring is still attached to the ejector some people drill a hole and install a coil spring.

You can go here and see a left hand extractor/spring.  Click on the closeup view.

Swapped out the right hand Extractor, spring and plunger.  The new spring was considerably longer, and had to polish the extractor a bit to make everything work.  Better, but not as good as I think it should be.  I suspect someone did some work on it before, as the old spring wasn't broken, but appeared to be either a shorter spring or cut.

Maybe I can get to the left hand extractor Tuesday or Wednesday.

Wow, kind of a pricey little thing, isn't it? I have an old '97 that I think needs one, it tends to just drop the empty case down onto the following round, seems like the left hand extractor doesn't grip the case. If you're single loading, you have to turn the gun sideways to dump out the empty.

Yep.  Remember the guns went out of production almost 60 years ago and the original parts supply was exhausted decades ago.  These parts have to be custom made.  Do some research.  There are two or three other specialty suppliers that make the extractors.  You might find one a little cheaper.

Probably the "best" left side extractor I found for the '97 is the one offered by Cowboys And Indian Store.  It DOES require fitting.  They are a VERY good extractor.  When you go shopping by price, remember, usually you get what to pay for.
