While not completely Cowboy, Patton did carry an SAA. I'm curious about how his holsters were constructed. Specifically, is the holster one cut piece with an additional liner for the belt loop? Or was the loop a seperate piece stitched to the holster body?

Essentially, they were built like cop leather - about 17 years after the time span of the Old West.

Those in that link are pretty much a Threeperson holster. Im fairly sure I've seen pictures of him wearing more straight hang holsters too.

I did a patton holster a while back. In making the holster I did a lot of research including calling the Patton Museum and finding someone that was actually willing to go look at the paton holster while I asked questions. In the Early 1970's a popular law enforcement holster was the Jordan also Known as the Border Patrol Holster it was developed by Bill Jordan and Don Hume. However it was based on the Patton holster. It is a little hard to explain the constructiion with out some pictures. I will dig up my notes and some construction pictures and post later today.  Here is a picture of the patton holsters belt and pistols on display at the Patton Museum at Ft. Knox.

Patton had his holsters and belt made by SD Meyer Co. in 1915 when he was a Lt. in the Cavalry. El Paso Saddlery bought Assets and Patterns of SD Meyer and I believe what they sell is based on the original pattern.

SD Myers made the earlier Threeperson holsters that were the predecessor to the border patrol holster. The main difference is the border patrol holster has the drop built into it where the Threeperson holster sat high.

Here are picturse of the Threee persons, Patton, Border patrol and the El paso Patton.

As to the construction. It is basically three pieces with a metal liner. The main holster body, the part that forms the balt loop and holds the metal liner to the body. A smaill piece that covers the top of the liner and holds it against the back of the belt loop. I was not able to attach a PDF. If you PM me your email I can give you a stepby step with some crude drawings but should be able to give you the information you want on construction.

Camano, I think you've answered my question. I'm not looking to recreat Patton's holsters, I just wanted to know how they were constructed. Thanks.
