I told my wife when we got married that I'd live in a packing crate under the freeway before I'f ever push a mower again.  That was 37 years ago and I have kept my word.  If I can afford to have the lawn cared for I won't have a lawn.

Moving to Arizona and it seems the entire town of Prescott is pretty much lawnless.

Lived in some lawnless neighborhoods as a kid - don't remember hearin' 'em call rock patch.  Been told: "Get off my gravel" & a lot of old people called 'em "gardens".  The only ones we really stayed out of had plenty of cacti.

There was a guy in My home town that took out his yard and replaced it with pea gravel.  He painted the gravel green. He was not a popular person in the neighborhood.

Cacti (my neighbor calls them "cactapusses") all over the area.  Might be some on the place we buy, or we'll put some in.  My wife loves cactapusses.

I have seen field stones used in a lot of different ways in very different areas through out the world.
Some used to build the house and other structures, some used to create fence rows and property boundaries.
The clearing of field stones is most important if the land is meant for agriculture. One can not blow rocks!
Grassing land is somewhat less important when it comes to cleaning the field stones.

I have known folks that create "Rock Gardens", often with various forms of cacti or other forms of prickly plants. The rocks in the garden are not just average rocks, but rocks with lots of fossil and/or crystal formations. Otherwise, the rocks are used in a garden/yard wall around the house.

My biggest problem is going to be finding rocks in Prescott.  Any suggestions?

I got a lot of rocks here in the Missouri Ozarks, but shipping might be a bit costly, they're as heavy as.....rocks!

Four-Eyed Buck

Well, you can always rake the sand,40 ::) ;D

We're just about into mowing season here now, probably have to fire mine up this week and go ride the tractors, too ::)

Forty Rod,  I will help you with rocks, here in Maine that is our best crop.  I have so many piles of the blade busters I am more then willing to share.  To get you started I have boxed up some and will get them in the mail , Monday.   Seriously, I build stone walls as part of my landscaping business, I have so many rocks that I will never be able to use them all.  Wish it was inexpensive to get some to you.

We've been mowing the last two days here. Trying to get caught up after the rains we've had. I've been riding a Kubota with 4 wheel drive and a 50" cut.Think I've got the controls figured out now. We've also got a Cub Cadet, but it's been on the fritz. Went back to the shop late yesterday ::)

I hope that the temp will be cooler today, the yards need mowing. It is cool right now, but the sun is not completely up  yet. I hope the humidity will not be too bad. The next chance for rain is tomorrow.

I would like to have a riding lawn mower, but I do not have a place to put it, unless I put up a metal storage building for it in the back yard. I still have not got my wife convinced on the storage building.

The Kubota here is stored in a real barn. Upper section of a bank barn, the lower is the club house. The Cub is stored in a small barn on the manager's lot. No mowing today, rained. Back at it tomorrow, though ::)

I had a few of them,  When I bought this place , the PO had 12 HP Crapsman that came with. ::)  it had a single lung Briggs motor.
I used it a few times but it blew up , so gave it away to a fella for parts.

I bought a 21 Horse Kohler twin Cyl. Cub Kadet used it several seasons and used it pretty much up...

I replaced with a Twin Kohler on a Lawnboy/Craftsman chassis , that one burned in the barn fire in 2011....

I have Ariens 24 HP Hydrostatic now and seems to be doing well 3 years in....
