Hi Gents,
Im having a problem with my Iver Johnson imported Uberti Cattleman. It was made in '76. Seriel number 41976. It needs a new hand assemble as the original, doesnt turn/lock up the cylinder as it its supposed to. However i went to VTI and the hand assemblies they have for the Cattleman look nothing like mine. What can i do?

Thanks,
Jacob

Looks like on the old one you have they used a separate piece for the hand pivot.  On the new ones it is cast in, but should be in the same approximate location.  About all you can do is buy a new one and try to fit it to the gun.  The hand in the photo doesn't look all that bad.  What is the problem?

Its too worn now to lock up the cylinder when it rotates into place. If i cock the hammer too fast, the cylinder is off alignment.

You can peen it to stretch the length and re fit....

What you are saying doesn't make any sense.  The hand does not lock the cylinder.  The bolt does.  If you cock the hammer to fast and the cylinder is off alignment that sounds like over rotation.  You might have a bolt or bolt spring problem.  The hand really doesn't look to bad.  I'm glad you posted the photo.  Gives me an idea on how to correct the timing on some C&B conversions.

Ok its over rotation then. My apologies, im not a gunsmith by any stretch of the imagination.

Although i have already replaced the bolt and bolt spring previously thinking that was the problem.

I withdraw my idea, I was thinking it was warn & was not reaching lock up, not over reaching/rotating .... :-\

I have an old one that had that same problem (over rotation) & took it to a gunsmith I trust. He said the hand had been replaced but not fitted. He fixed it with a little file work.

Maybe thats the case. The hand looks like it has been taken out and filed in some places. You may not be able to see that from the pic.

Thanks,
Jacob

I have another question. VTI has two different options for the Hand. One with a Pin thats .150 in diameter and one thats .180 in diameter. Since this is an italian part, is it listed in millimeters or whatever the hell we use here in the states?

Thanks,
Jacob
