Fitted a new stock and forearm to my 1873 Winchester Carbine today. The old set was very bad and loose . The little rifle feels solid now. Will start the finish sanding and stain work.Picked up a bottle of (Winchester Stock Oil) By John Kay. Heard this was a very good product. Has anyone here used this type oil finish before? Here is a pic. of the little Carbine just fitted, with no finish . Will post a pic. when finish is complete.,,,,Dusty

Myself, I have tried many stains/dyes through the years and there is one that is IMO the best. It does however need to be diluted as it is rich: Behlen Blood Red. For a finishing oil use Liberon. It's the best.  ;)

Someone is handy with tools, very nice.  Where did you pick up the wood?

Thanks for the comments Fellers.Bob the wood came from / Precision Gun Works ,Inc. out of Kerrville Tx. Very little work was needed to get the stocks fitted to the Carbine. Very pleased with thier product. After a few coats of oil finish that little.44 SCR will be a Jeep gun until the Grandboys get it,,,,,,,,,,Dusty

That is some nice wood.  Personally, I like natural wood finished with Satin Spar Varnish.  Gives the wood a nice warm tint without a glossy finish.  I use the smooth side of old sweat pants/shirts to rub it in.  Following instructions on the can and applying 4 to 6 coats.  Works a treat.

My favorite filler/stain is the Ol' Herters French Red Filler and Stain formerly sold by Herters, but now sold by Arts Gun Shop. Available from Brownell's and some other sources. Expensive, but so is fine sippin whiskey over the rot gut stuff. The French Red gives as is advertised the pre-64 Winchester color (with a slight reddish hue), awful pretty color and result. For a finish, a number of years ago at a gun show, I bought a bottle of a product called "Arrow", which is applied and similar to Tru-oil and Linspeed. Can't say which one is superior, but I like it. Can be found on-line (need to get some more, good stuff).
(Hey Jubal, how-ya' like this post, I gave both Herters and Brownell's a plug on the same postin'!!!)

Dusty,

Looks very good! and the color also looks great!

I like to take a good boiled linseed oil mixed 50 50 with distilled Turpentine (I buy these at an art store to make sure they are of the highest quality).
This allows the oil to soak deep into the wood and really brings out the colors of the natural wood. Allow time for drying and apply again and again, adding a bit more linseed oil as you go.

Very nice.

Thank's for the reply Fellow's. That sound's like a good mix for finish Blair. This mix is the linseed oil base and dye. That is what they are calling the Winchester Oil. I mixed that with mineral spirit's 50/50 and rubbed it in with fingers untill it gets warm . It soaked that first coat up quick.  Will put many /many more .Nice day with good sun and 30 % Humidity helped a bunch.,,,,,Dusty

Dusty,

No dye! just the oil to bring out the color of the wood.
Mineral spirits and Mineral Oil are petroleum based products. I would suggest you stay away from them.
They also do not tend to dry, even in the dryer climate that you live in, compared to what we have here in FL.

As a side note, Spare Varnish is a good product. It is also offered with a UV protective additive. (especially as a finale coating)
Your arm may never be subjected to the UV rays that a Ships upper Wood work is, but it maybe a consideration for you in the long term?

Hey Dusty - that little SRC is turning into something really sweet, good job.  I'd say that's prety close to the look of my '73 SRC with 120+ year old wood.
