Iam a little new to this site but I really like it. Iam a retired dealer and have been shooting old Winchesters and Colt SAAs and Conversions for 40 years, and have learned a lot sense signing on with you. Just thought I would add my 2 cents on loading Unique powder in the 44 Colt as I have been asked by my friends. I load 4.7grs on the low side and 5.5 max. behind a 200gr FN. and CCI large pistol primer. I know it is a  little dirty but if you have ever shot good old black powder like you should in the open tops you would not worry about dirty. Also a lot of you will think the loads are mild, but they are good loads for smokeless in an open top. I have switched to 3.2 to 4.0grs. of Trail Boss with the same bullet and primers with just as good results if not better. Trail Boss meters very good in my RCBS Little Dandy Powder Measure. Hope this helps someone out there.
Thanks again to all,

I'm trying to find the same load for my two 1871-2's in .44 special. today 4.5 and 5.5 gr of TB seem to work best(out of 6 gr.s of TB and 5 gr's of TB.  I'm  loading a 215 gr. RNFN thats tumbled lubed I haven't tried tried 3.2 or 4 gr's of TB yet.(I didn't know you could go that low with TB.) "O" ,7.5 in barrels. and yes, for Cowboy shooting!

I know 3.2 to 4.0 of TB sounds a little low, but that's what the Trail Boss new guide said to start at in the 44 Colt and it is first ime I have used it and has worked for me. I will go up a little and see. I just can't see loading the open tops on the top end of the scale in the 44 Colt. These guns are for fun and CAS.

I've loaded plenty of 44 Colts with Accurate Powder No.2. It's pretty clean and meters real well thru a powder measure.

I used some Titegroup  and it works well. Position insensitive so the small amount in the case means little with that powder.

Never tried Unique but I will someday.

I started with the Accurate No.2 because Accurate was the only one to show loads for 44 Colt when I started into that round.

The 44 Colt is a good cartridge with black or smokeless powder. I like it. It's kinda authentic too even if you ain't loadin heal bullets and all that. The 44 Colt was hotter than the Russian and not as hot as the 44 Spl.

Anywhoooo.....I like the Accurate No.2 and the Titegroup powder in it.

I like 5.0gr Unique or 4.0gr Titegroup under a 240gr Hornady swaged SWC/HP.
