What have you done to reduce the recoil on the 20inch barrel SXS's?

Pettifogger

Shoot Winchester Feather lites and install a recoil pad.

Blair

I have found the added weight of a longer barrel on a firearm helps to make the felt recoil less.

Shoot 80+ grain black powder loads, and install a metal buttplate.  ;D

Forgot .........
Depending on the gun, having the forcing cone(s) lengthened can have a great deal of effect on felt recoil.

Think Featherlites Grasshopper.  Featherlites .............

The extra hundred bucks for the "Supreme" version of the Stoeger coach gun got me a stainless receiver, screw in choke tubes, and a RUBBER BUTT PLATE.  The Factory rubber butt plate works well.

There are aftermarket rubber butt plates available out there if you already have a SxS, but expect to have to do a bit of fitting to make it fit right.

Seth Hawkins

Shoot a box or two of my BP loads.  After that, anything you shoot will feel like a "featherlite" load.   ;D

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

The British gunmakers had a "rule" that the gun should weigh 96 times the weight of shot you intend to shoot. The result was a balance of power, shootability and portability.  Think 6 pounds for a 1 ounce load and 7 1/2 pounds for 1 1/4 ounce load. Not cast in concrete but think about the weight of your gun vs. the load. CAS targets don't need much power to put down. Superlights, or equivalent are a good bet.

When attempting to shoot quickly it is easy to fail to shoulder the butt firmly or high enough in the shoulder "pocket". Poor gun mounting can accentuate felt recoil.

PS: 2Apr14;  Poor gun mounting almost ALWAYS CAUSES HIGH SHOTS.

The feather lites have arrived.  Shotguns are at Johnny Meadows.

Are they being worked on by Johnny Meadows? What work does he do to it?

Sleepy Floyd

On my Rossi, Polish chambers, lightning and polishing internal surfaces and springs, stay open feature and bevel chambers, put on a taller front sight.

The same for my wifes Norinco plus lighten up the external hammers.

Then cutting the stock to fit and add a Kickezz pad. for both.

Just got the shotguns back from Johnny Meadows.  He did a great job.  Recoil is minimal.  Wife is ordering one of those undershirt ones for extra cushion.  Today was her first time ever shooting.  She put through 16 rounds without to much complaint.

First match is approaching.

What is this recoil you speak of?

The force applied to your wife's shoulder that caused large bruises and then she knocks you down.

50 grains of 1F and 1 ounce of shot with a good recoil pad (Stoger Supreme) is a pleasure to pull the trigger on.

Baltimore Ed

I have bad a shoulder and this is my solution. Try 3/4 oz of #9 shot over bushing# 381 of Clay Dot or Red Dot, use a CB0125 pink wad. Works fine on our clubs sg knockdown targets. A lace on pad helps.

Well, I have an accidental discovery.  I found 1 Oz of shot, 1 Oz of 2F APP, A 10GA Plastic wad and over shot card in an All Brass 12Ga
hull results in almost ZERO recoil in a TTN Hammer Double.
