before I joined SASS I already had all the gear, so being adventurous and a movie buff, I attempted said fanning. We have some land that we go shooting on, in a ravine, and we usually shoot at coffee cans, both sizes. Out of 6 shots, fanning as fast I could, I hit two cans. Never tried it again. This was done with a .45 Vaquero, with out action job.

Slip thumbing is faster and way more accurate!

I tried it once with my Ruger Single Six (.22)  -- Might as well shoot with a blindfold  :D
That told me not to try with the .45.

Fanning can be fairly accurate.  I have a video of Ed McGivern to some remarkable things with revolvers and one was fanning.  Another was slip hammering or thumbing.
I had old Hawes 22 that I could fan fairly well and keep a cam bouncing but with a heavy recoiling gun like a 45 it's pretty tough to hit much.
