I agree with you 100% on your stand.   It seems like no matter where you go there is always a jerk who messes things up.  Good luck at the doctor's.  Ron

Indeed, I won't use PP, there was just the once, minor purchase ( I was the payee ) no problem except PP email the pee out of me to setup an account . Almost like one of those telemarketers, PITA finally blocked them as SPAM.

I think you well within your rights,  its called "workman lien"  as advised save your paper trail.
At some point, you can sell the piece to re-coop some of your loss.

Gentlemen,

You may want to consider that Paypal can and will seize your funds if they find out you are using their service for purchases and or services that violate their terms. Part of the terms involves paying for and or selling firearms and some firearm services.

I urge you to please read through the rules regarding firearms.

I know of one case where Paypal froze the account for over 1 year of someone who used it to purchase a firearm and there was some dispute later.

Hoof Hearted

Policy:

relate to transactions involving (a) narcotics, steroids, certain controlled substances or other products that present a risk to consumer safety, (b) drug paraphernalia, (c) items that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity, (d) stolen goods including digital and virtual goods (e) items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime, (f) items that are considered obscene, (g) items that infringe or violate any copyright, trademark, right of publicity or privacy or any other proprietary right under the laws of any jurisdiction, (h) certain sexually oriented materials or services, (i) ammunition, firearms, or certain firearm parts or accessories, or (j) ,certain weapons or knives regulated under applicable law.

Ambiguous at best but services is not mentioned. I have spoken with PayPal employees in the past who advised me that I was within their policy.

That being said their user agreement should have protected me as there was NO DEFINITIVE DATE for completion, only an estimate, and they threw me to the wolves to uphold a CC company's ill informed decision.

I'm very much mixed on using PP...........I 'm troubled by their stand on firearms...But when I decided to use them in selling my wares, my business increased over 400%.......There is NOTHING like being able to instantly buy something with a couple of clicks. When I only accepted checks or MO, over 50% of the inquires did not turn into sales. Folks just don't want to be bothered with MOs or waiting for the goods until their check clears. Now that I accept PP, I can't remember the last time an inquiry DIDN'T turn into a sale. And 35% of my business I don't even talk to a customer. It all happens automatically, including printing the shipping label and keeping a log of sales for tax purposes.

I buy much of my reloading supplies from a couple vendors that accept PayPal simply because they DO accept PayPal and ordering is so easy.

I buy lots of stuff off eBay for my shooting hobby because it is so easy and eBay has relaxed much of its prohibition about firearm parts etc.

OK Roy

I completely understand your position and while it does bring sales of product I'm not sure that it will affect my service driven business since I am in such a niche market. All that being said do you feel I should raise my prices in order to insulate myself from the potential losses?

Even thou it may effect the work you are doing for me I belive you should raise your prices
to protect you from lossing money. But on the other hand your niche market may suffer
from a large price increese. But a modest increse would be accetable in my oppinon.

PRICES?....I'm a small business consultant in real life, so I deal with this all the time.

If a price is too low, folks will perceive poor quality (See the book "GLOCK Americas Gun" ), but too high and folks won't buy your wares.

But in the service business it is all about "time"...Time is money. A gunsmith that delivers fast and more importantly, on time, will need a wheelbarrow to take the money to the bank......I do a bunch of business with JES Reboring, simply amazing how fast he can turn around a re-bore, re-rifle and chamber project. Never more than two or three weeks, point to point. Folks always comment about this before they talk about quality of work (which is great BTW)

The problem with the gunsmithing business, is you can't charge what the work is really worth. Your cost of doing business, when you factor in insurance, utilities, materials, screw-ups really needs to be $100-$150 per hour. Any less and when all is said and done you are better off as a Small Business Consultant....  ;D

I too talked to "Hoof" about a week ago as well. He seems in good spirits and here is hoping he can get appropriate treatment to get him more mobile and lessen his pain.

Howdy!

Sorry for the absence.......it is amazing how little I can do in a day with my health issues :-\
Here's the current report:

I am disabled and due to negligence on the hospital and doctor I will remain this way (pretty damn tough on a 53 year old horse trainer and was never even a concern in my business plans). The only options to "fix" my blocked IVC will end up in Kidney failure or organ failure/death with a huge concern for a Pulmonary Embolism (actually that will always be lurking). What this means is I get about 10% of the day and sometimes less. I am still chasing doctors opinions, tests and trying to take advantage of my insurance being maxed out with other things like colonoscopy and other fun things. All of these appt's are hours away and take up a whole day. The specialist I consulted told me to think about "early retirement" and I told him I would trade my crew cab, 4 wheel drive, F550 Diesel flat bed for his Prius and get a condo in the "city". In the 4 weeks that I have been out of ICU my endurance has increased quite a bit and I can now walk about 40 - 50 steps before my legs reach fatigue (like 100 flights of stairs) then I just stand where ever I am and wait a couple of minutes...........looks pretty stupid in the middle of a parking lot.

Need to find a good Medical Malpractice Attorney.

So no new work for a while, some progress on the 6 in the shop and it will be a while before I know where my place in all this will end up!

Where are you located Hoof?  I know a string of attorneys in different disciplines I have worked with over the years, some are extremely fine.  You may call me at 850-297-1413.

You want to speak with Rand Nolen in Houston.  His number is 713-621-7944.  Don't worry about him being in Houston, if he cannot personally help you he knows someone who will.  You were referred to him by John Weston in Pennsylvania.

Best of luck

Thought I better update ya'll.............

I know there are many people wanting to send me work and I have put you all off first due to my blood clot, surgery, hospital time, recovery and second due to shows (our National and World shows stretch from September 1st through October 4th). I am home now and although I have hay to cut, farm equipment to fix (crap breaks even when I don't use it) unpacking of horse trailer and all the harness' and other training/showing ephemera, fence to fix where a huge oak tree fell into it and two guns still here to finish (bluing solution seems to have died in my absence). I am now facing Kidney Cancer surgery on October 15th..................

About 2 weeks before we left for the National show I rec'd a call from my Urologist's office and "Kevin" told me the Dr wanted him to call me to tell me I had Kidney Cancer. I said WHAT! He had some specifics but no answers and then after a few calls back to the Dr's office I was told I would have to wait until my scheduled appt next Monday. This really pissed me offand was very "clinical" and without much concern for me but hey, no one cares about anyone but themselves and they are "just doing their job"..............

So next week on October 15th (the day after my 54th birthday) I go into UTSW for Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma surgery where they will be removing a portion of my right Kidney. The attempted surgery will be Laproscopic but because of my "collateral" veins (because of my blocked IVC all of the small veins in my legs and abdomin have stretched out to carry more return blood to my heart becoming weak and are now "under pressure") and the whole fear of blood clot situation (I have to go off thinners for approx 3 weeks) so I have increased risk of DVT, stroke, and Pulmonary Embolism. If we experience problem such as nicking a vein and bleeding than the surgery becomes "full" surgery and a longer recovery.

The Cancer is very early and I am "one of the lucky ones" since it was found in the MRI's and scans that I had due to my previous medical issues.

Don't know how long I will be down or when I will be back to working on guns but I plan to get back ASAP.
