What Caliber is this piece ?

Howdy Lefty!

This one is in 38 Colt Heel Base.
In Colts Navy type revolvers there is also 41 Thuer®.
Both of these chamberings will allow the interchangeability of the Cap and Ball cylinder.

Barrel lining is available for 38 Inside Lubed.............

HH,

Very nice.
But I got to ask, why do you call it an R. E. Lee?
My best,

If I may,  that is a Second Gen. Colt ,
LEE & GRANT 1851 NAVY MODELS COLTS COMMEMORATIVE ISSUED IN 1971

That one would be Roll engraved " Robert E. Lee Commemorative Nineteen Hundred Seventy One"
when planets align...do the deal !

Blair

Major 2,

Yes, I understand the mumbo-jumbo.
Thanks.

I am by no means an expert on 2nd gen Colts pistols :P

Major2 answered Blair's question but now I'm going to ask the experts here.............

While I understand the RE Lee and US Grant pistols are classified as 2nd gen, weren't they the "First"ones made?
They are different in many ways than the C series pistols I have seen.

Yep, as far as I can remember they were the first of the 2nd Gen Colts.  I have two new in the cases Robert E. Lee's if you need some more.  Bought them because almost all of the 2nd Gen 1851 Navy's had square back trigger guards that are tight even on my little fingers.  The Lee's and and just a very few standard 51s had the round trigger guard.

I have a couple but could also swap into another couple............send me a PM ;)

I need a used hammer for a second gen (bought an "antiqued" RE Lee that got the hammer way too rusted) :-\

HH,

Some folks give a name to their firearms.
I was just wondering why Robert E. Lee, if that was a name you chose.

Naming a firearm seems a bit goofy to me ::)
I guess this is a case of Ass-u-me (I should have never assumed everyone here know what a Robert E lee was).

All is good.....

HH,

I had actually forgotten about the Colt Sponsored copies.
I thought the promotional names assigned to them were kind of goofy. (or as I called it "mumbo-jumbo")

Well, in some cases, there is suppose to be some form of commeration associated with certain firearms when they are released.  Usually some badging, or plaquage or special engraving.  Could be, in this case it's because Bob carried a '51 throughout the Civil War.  Beyond that, the guns are a bunch of Uberti parts, assembled by contractors then labeled Colt.
Where was I??
Oh yea, nice guns.  The barrels are too long.
