I noticed that several of the Natives were wearing a 'Telescope' type crease on their hats. I've had numerous experts assure me that this crease is very modern, not to the time of the Old West.

I agree Shotgun. I have heard so-called experts pull the FARB card on the telescoped fold and even brass hat vents despite the existence of original examples and period photographic evidence as well.

Great link Fox Creek; Thanks for sharing. I'm adding these to my collection of 1863 Rudolph D'Heureuse photos made with the 4th California in Southern California and Arizona. People really need to study these pictures to  get a better feel for how they should look.

Thanks, Check out photos by Louis de Planque who was a Prussian immigrant who took photos in south TX & northern Mexico during & after the Civil War.

Here's one of the D'Heureuse views from the Bancroft that caught my eye. There actually are some very broad brimmed hats in this image, but considering the fierceness of the sun, not so surprising.

Its not a stupid question, its a great one. These pictures were taken in the Mojave and Sonora deserts. Good advice to the people who wear the eastern calico shirts out here in the Western deserts is that you need a lot more protection. Thin cotton shirts are only good as undershirts. Flannel shirts are best for guarding you from the sun. Layers (especially wool vests, coats, etc) actually breathe real well in the heat out here. When the humidity is up during monsoon season (summertime), stripping to the flannel shirt helps you vent while adequately protecting you from the sun. Also, the winters in our deserts are unbelievably cold at times.
