thanks all. ck out picks on other post whats up with the ring bar.

Freek,

Could just be someone's modification from what the original ring was like, maybe they just needed a bigger loop for their style of sling.

Interesting photo, thanks for posting.

look at the shape of the lever. with closed. its far away from the receiver???????????

freek

OK.  If you look at the pic the action is closed.  However, the back of the cocking lever is at least 1/2 in away from the trigger plate.  The lever does not seem to be bent.  Has anyone seen something like this?

The odd sling bar shape is not all that unusual for some carbines of European influence. I would believe it was something done after market perhaps by the French.
The leaver hanging some what loose may also be a modification/alteration to the coil spring between the upper and lower breach blocks. (just a guess on my part). Replacement springs should be available from S&S Firearms or Lodgewood, along with the proper sling bar replacement.

Freek,

Model 1865 Spencers were manufactured too late to be used in the Civil War . . . no information available in print on their history . . . probably became a civilian purchase . . . maybe travelled out West with their owners . . . many were sold overseas.

I have no suggestions to make on the shape of the saddle ring.

The loop material, judging by those ring shape marks at the rear, could very well be made from a wire nail?
