A modern Uberti .44 Russian New Model #3?

Has anyone ever tried to put a Uberti .44 Russian barrel and cylinder on a Beretta Laramie or Taylor Frontier grip frame to get a true .44 Russian New Model #3? Is it even possible?

My only other option is to modify a Russian model to mimic a New Model #3, but I don't know how cost effective that would be or who would even do the necessary work...

I love the New model #3 replicas more than Schofield and Russian models, but I just wish they came in different calibers other than just .45 colt and .38 special.

The CA852 is a 44-40 New Model #3.  At least with that you have the correct bore and would only have to change or modify a cylinder.

Patrick.

Best suggestion I can offer is to buy the book, "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945", by R.J. Neal & R.G. Jinks.
Providing you want to learn the real differences between the #3, Model #3's and the New Model #3 Smith & Wesson's.

Patrick: I saw your posting today, and wondered what you decided to do? If you're looking for an original S&W #3 Russian. 3rd model, I have one for sale. Asking $1500.00. four digit serial number in 6000 range. Has been refinished sometime in its past, looks like an almost brand new uberti, but isn't.

patrick_ford

I appreciate the offer, but I was not talking about getting an original. I wanted a modern gun that could shoot smokeless loads that came as close to the original as possible. I ended up getting a Uberti Schofield in .45 colt and am making due until something more a kin to what I am looking for becomes available.

I am trying to get a Taylor's New Model #3, but they are precious and rare in the wild.

Thanks,

Patrick

I was lucky, some planets aligned, and a combination of availability, having some of the funds + a trade  all at the same time...
netted this gem ....
It enjoys .45 Schofield , look for an up coming review in the Shootist.
when planets align...do the deal !

Taylors New Model #3 in 45 Colt, converted to 44 Russian (by me).  Not for sale or trade for anything.  It's the gun Uberti never made but should have.  Shoots like a dream.

I've shot about 2,000 rounds through it so far.  The more I shoot it, the better I like it.  I shoot NCOWS Working Cowboy.  This has become my main match gun.

patrick_ford

What did you do to convert the revolver from .45 colt to .44 russian?

Looks like he put the barrel/cylinder from a "russian" on a "new model".

Hi,
I need a triggerguard for an original S&W new Model 3 Single action.  Does anyone know if a Uberti schofield or any reproduction
will fit?
Regards
Colt

Blair

Colt Fanning,

Yes. They did interchange. I do not know if they still do.

Colt Fanning,

I must apologize, I miss read your question regarding the interchageability of the "New" made copies with an original New Model 3 trigger guard.
The new trigger guards are too wide and too long to fit in the original frames.

That's cool Roger,

I modded mine to OEM S&W grips , very easy fit ....

I also popped the gold U medallion out of my Walnut grips and replace then with a walnut plug, sanded them flush and re-stained them.
Though I'll stay with the Black Checkered.

IF you care to do the same I'll send you some walnut plugs.

Thanks Major.  I'll have it at the National Congress next spring.  I'll have some extra ammo should the temptation be too great and you simply must shoot it.

Hi,
How much too wide and long is the repo part?  Could it be ground down to fit?

Blair

Colt Fanning,

I suppose it could be fitted up in both the width and length, but then you may also have a problem with the screw hole alignment.
I can't help but think that finding an original trigger guard would be a lot easier? Sorry, I can't offer any help on where you might find one.
