Here is a Rolling Block we built a few years ago for silhouette shooting.  A friend did the barrel work and I did the wood fitting and checkering.

The action is an original 7 MM. The barrel is a Badger in 40-65. Wood is from Treebone Carving and the Soule sight is an Italian modified by Lee Shaver and me.  Front sight is a Lyman 17A that has a spirit level added. The shotgun style pad is s Pachmayr.

My Good Kid -
If you go over here
http://sassnet.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=215739
you will find Dusty selling 3 perfectly good Swede's for $375, $400, and $425 -
they are Sporterized Swediah Military rifles in 12.7 X 44R , but are quite affordable .

But good sights can set you back more than one of those rifles....

hope this helps

Y' wanna know the sad part?  I just spent the last of my gun money (for the moment)  on my 1911.....  There will come a day when opportunity come a-knockin'.

Whadja buy for a 1911?

I own three, my wife two, and she's thinking about another for herself.

I bought THE 1911.  Not a "Real" 1911, though.  It's an ARMSCOR/RIA Commander model, with a hard case and 8 rd mag.  I got a box of cheap ammo, as well.  $22 for 50rds.  Not bad.

One thing for sure - this will NOT be your one and only 1911!

A little history ....

It was the Canadian Expeditionary Force that first used the 1911 in WWI. In casting about for the BEST combat pistol on the market, it was obvious which to choose.
Considering that we had always shown deference to the weaponry of the Mother Country, this was quite a departure. Not that we didn't also use Colt, S&W and Webley revolvers.

I saw one of those early commercial 1911's in the Museum of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada (2nd Bn). It had been the personal weapon of one of their Colonels during the war.

The 1911 is definitely a widely traveled, famed and used little pistola.  I wonder why... ::) ::) ::) ::) You are right that it will not be the last.  I got my eye on a pair at one of the gunshops.  1914 vintage.  successive serial numbers.  One has ivory grips, the other plain walnut.  both are engraved, with gold inlays.  All original parts, too.  Less than 500 rounds through them.  Price, a bargain of $5999+tax, FFL fee, background check fee etc...

You can never have enough money for all the guns you want.

You're right about that!

I'd be leery of any provenance that claims a low round count for guns of that vintage. How would anyone know? Even if it was just one mag, it's just another used 1911.

Of course, the fact that there are two, gold inlaid, and genuine ivory all might factor into the price....

Something is worth what someone will pay for it. The market sets the price.

You would not believe the ridiculous prices that original Colts command in Canada right now, because of their exempt registration 'antique status'. Same for beat up, run-of-the-mill Winchesters.

TK,

I would not want to be the one that would discourage you from building your own long range rifle.
It is a fun, if not usually, a profitable project in the long term. Others have tried to point that out to you as well.
All I have hoped to do was to get you to slow down and maybe do some research before you got too involved.
Please continue your quest.
My best,
