What if he heads east?

I'm trying to build an historically accurate set of gear for a man that went west as a minor miscreant and came back a preacher. Something like "Pale Rider". What I don't yet have are a good set of constraints besides "metallic cartridge" and "has seen the rougher side of western life".

Thoughts on periods or phases of activity? Obviously the War of Northern Aggression is one demarcation point, as is the advent of the 1873 SAA. Maybe 1866-1887 for cattle drive era? What other major influences would there be to research?

Blessings,

Head to your Public Library - as has already been suggested - and check out the Time-Life publications - 'The Old West'.

It covers a multitude of scenarios, complete with fairly clear black and white period photography, and is a good starting point.

Building your persona from the movies is an idea, but the 'John Ford Reference Library' isn't known for historical accuracy, and what you see on the Silver Screen and the small screen is the 'Reel Old West' and not the 'Real Old West'.

Scouts Out!
