The EPA is closing the last Lead Smelter in the US. I bought 50 lbs of good clean lead today, just in case.
I've heard opinions expressed that this is another attempt to do backdoor restrictions on ammo. I figured having some lead setting around can't hurt.

Probably be more useful than silver polar bear coins....

If my arithmetic was right, I got enough to cast 17,500 200 gr bullets.

In the past I have been able to mine the backstop for fired bullets.  There is some work involved but there you are.

And when that runs out ..... ?

We recently replaced all the rubber belting over the steel baffles plates in our indoor range. There was a wagon load of lead, free for the taking. I dug out one 5 gallon pail and realized that I was going to need a gravel screen to get rid of a lot of crap, then have one hell of a job melting down what remained.
That meant a lot of time over the lead furnace pouring ingots. I decided I wasn't that desperate - yet.

For those that shoot at a commercial range, mining might not be an option. I do intend to lay up more if I can. It can't hurt.

Doe Run is the company that owns the smelter in MO that the EPA is forcing to close. However, they own many different operations world wide..........the closest is in Peru, South America. They just restarted that operation in June 2013 after a big cleanup and new filter systems forced on them by Washington putting pressure on the Peruvian Gov...........however, that site was one of the worst polluted smelters in the world at one time......if you believe the tree huggers.

Peru has a Free Trade Agreement with the US........so prices may not go to much higher..........one hopes.
