We took the horses over to the in-laws to pasture this morn. Found one of these in the back of a pickup. It doesn't have all the parts. It was patented in September 1865. The in-laws family used to grow sorghum.

Sounds like you have plenty of motors for it - can you tell what parts are missing?  Can replacements be found?

I haven't gone back to look closer yet. But, I think the vertical shaft with the gear and the apparatus that the mule is attached to are missing. I need to talk to my MIL for more info.

I've seen one use at Westville Ga. http://www.westville.org/farm.html  scroll down for the video.

There also one used prominently in the Film  "Sergeant York"  on the Zeb Andrews farm....

Kinchafoonee Kid

I grew up about 30 miles from Westviille, and spent a lot of time there as a kid.  My ancestors lived in the Wells house, which now stands in Westville, restored to its former glory.

A gentleman named Kary Thornton used to have a sugar cane mill that he operated out on his farm.  He fashioned a sapling to the top of the mill, and had an old mule to turn it. The tracks in that race were nearly  a foot deep!  That old mule, who we always brought carrots and apples for, had spent many years walking Samson like in a circle.

Mr. Thornton had the best sugar cane juice I can recall.  Very refreshing on a hot day!

Reenacting there many times I spent nights in the Rawson House, The McDonald House and The Grimes House, and several nights in the Court House.
I did Living History volunteer work at the  Singer Carpenter Cabinet Shop.
Some of my wood working , is still on display , including a hand made saddle tree....

The Sugar Cane mill is still used at the Harris Farmhouse, and they make the best juice , and a Ham Biscuit at special events.
