.38 S&W smokeless rounds are hard to find.  BP is next to impossible.  No one loads .38 S&W BP rounds so you will have to find vintage ammo or load your own.

Blackpowder Burn

Buffalo Arms (www.buffaloarms) lists it on their website, although they are currently out of stock.

Remember, we are talking about the .38 S&W not the .38 S&W Special (.38 Special).  You can't get 20 grains of powder in a .38 S&W case.  Just fill it up so when you seat the bullet you get about 1/16 to 1/8 inch of compression and you will be fine.

I used to load for it, .38 S&W. You can use .38 Special Dies by just sizing the very top of the case. Use unsized .357 lead bullets hand lubed with a BP type lube. Seat the bullet deep enough to just barely compress the powder and to fit the cylinder. Treat it like any other BP gun for clean up. I don't recommend cut down .38 Spl brass. Check the old gun shops for a box of ammo, pawn shops too. If you find any it will likely be smokeless. Just pull the bullets and start from there.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

The U.S. Government uses the .38 S&W cases for primers in some artillery simulator charges. I bought some off of Gunbroker a year or so ago, but I haven't seen them on there since. They are identifiable by the fact that they have no headstamp at all, but they are made by Winchester. You can get them from Starline when they have them in stock. Check here: https://www.starlinebrass.com/products/index.cfm/cid/11/38-S%26W-Brass/
The correct bullets are available here: https://www.starlinebrass.com/products/index.cfm/cid/11/38-S%26W-Brass/

I'm set up for .38 S&W. How many do you want? You buy the components and pay the freight and I'll make some up for you while I'm doing mine. That is unless you want a gazillion of them. The average cost of a box of 50 is about $8 to $10 if you already have the brass. If you don't have the brass then it's:
50 small pistol primers @ $30/1000 = $1.50
50 bullets from Missouri Bullets @ $35.50 + $10 shipping/500 = $5.50
50 brass from Starline @ 85.50 + $10 shipping/500 = $9.50
110 grains of Bullseye powder @ $35/pound ( 2.2 grains/round 7000 grains/pound) = $0.55
TOTAL: $17.05 + UPS Shipping
I could make up 500 of them for you, using all new brass for $200 + shipping. That way there isn't any left over cases or bullets.
E-Mail me if you are interested. I'm sure we could work out something on a share the cost basis too.
