What type buckle was used on the web trouser belt that was worn by US Army and/or USMC from the SAM up to and during the Punitive Expedition ?

As of 1912, the USMC buckle was the same as it is now.  We tend to be a bit wary of change for the sake of change!

This is what I went with for my Punitive Expedition uniform.  The web site said this about the belt:

"I am not sure when these were adopted, but Mills patent date is 1904. These were replaced in 1938 by a wider belt. This reproduction faithfully copies all markings of the buckle and tip, including Mills bullet logo. These are 40 inches long."

Plates from 1899 show them wearing suspenders.  So that would be my best guess for pre 1904.

Thank you gentlemen.  That's the one that I had seen in both original and reproduction form, but I could not find any written documentation, or even a photo for that matter!

Did the Marines in those days use the same, narrow belt as the Army (and reproduced by WPG)?

Yes.

They had no Marine-specific buckle.

As of 1912, the Marine belt was 1 3/8" wide.  That would preclude the use of the earlier narrow buckle.  To be honest, I have not researched earlier belts in the Marine Corps.
