1873 Springfield trap door carbine

Read a number of posts a few days ago relative to another posters question about his "trapdoor".  Posts indicated that the serial number is stamped into the lockplate just ahead of the "U.S. Springfield 1873" stamping. I have an authentic 1873 Springfield trap door that bears those markings (it is complete with the cleaning rod assembly in the stock), in very good condition - however, no serial number stamping appears where other posters indicate.  The only number of any sort that can be found anywhere is the number "48" stamped (impressed) into the bottom of the wood stock just ahead of the trigger guard - could this be how the very earliest models were numbered?

Looking at my originals - your serial number should be at the top rear of the receiver block.

There are no serial numbers on the lockplates - the lockplate is a separate replaceable item, while the receiver is permanent to the weapon, thus is the serial-numbered and therefore accountable part.

The number '48' is a Rack Number, if larger - an Inspector's Number if smaller.
