'72, '51 Conversion, or '60 conversion......can't decide

I'm wanting a cartridge open top, and can't decide. I've got a 51and a 60 I could convert. But I'm torn between just getting a 72 OT, or a 51 or 60 RM . What say ye?

Get one of each.

Just look at 'em long and hard, pick the one you simply have to have first.  I settled on the 1860 but now that I have those I want a representative sample of the others.

Thats what I did. I find that my '51 Conversions (.38 Spec) work much better for BP. I shoot Gunfighter and the brass front sight is much easier for me to aquire through the smoke. Now when I shoot smokeless, I use my '72 OT's (.44 Russian) w/Navy grips (fit my smallish hands better) because, frankly, they have a much finer sight and are probably more accurate. Both work great for Gunfighter/Duelist since they are nearly natural point shooting revolvers. When in doubt, buy 'em both!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, Yep, Yep.  My .72 OT's in .44 (Spcl/Russian) with the Navy grip are my favorite revolvers.  They almost aim themselves.  But the .51 with the gated conversion to .38 Long Colt and Tru-Ivory grips win the the cool contest hands down.  I shoot heeled 160 grain bullets using an NEI mould.

I'd convert my 60 since I found an uberti rd cylinder local to me, but the teeth on the backplate seem too wide in overall diameter. If I knew a little file work would let it engage, I'd pick it up. Just don't want to take such a chance.

Well ..... Your most most cost effective solution is to go to Taylors and get a conversion cylinder for your 1860.  They work quite well.  Not that I want to quash any reasoning you may have for a new gun.  A new gun is a wonderful thing and you simply can't have too many.
I shoot my Pietta 1860s (4 guns) with a pair of R&D cylinders, just switching the cylinders between guns.  I also use reduced main springs and C45S cases.  Great combination.

The Open Tops are an improvement over the mechanicals of the percussion converted types so the Open Top should last longer in good fit shape. I'dstart with the Open Top in 44 or 38 cal. first. The 45's are nice guns but.....the 44 and 38's are easier on the guns especially the 38's if using loads not hopped up like some magnum.
I don't thunk a person will stop there with an Open Top though and most would end up with the full selection of guns coming after the percussion period.
Just plan on trying them all.
