Take a bore light with you. Is there a possible price break if you buy more than a certain number?

As I stated, I'm not looking for a shop project . . .

But Dang! it is tempting.

RCJ

They will be complete but with some surface rust and potentially rough barrels. There is not further price break he is willing to give. This price is already for buying multiples.

Hi

I have a couple of questions on this.

Are you pretty sure we're going to be able to get these?  If so, I may go ahead and order some brass.

What size primers do these take?  My load books are in a different state, but I'm guessing Large Rifle.

Thanks again for doing this.  Much cheaper than the Sharps and I just don't want a trapdoor cause it doesn't seem strong enough to me.

I believe I will have no trouble getting them but I would hold off buying brass until I have secured it. They do take Large Rifle primers.

If someone has a good source for 30 40 brass please share it.  I can't find much and what I do find is very expensive.

Thanks

Hi  Bat

Both Graf and MidwayUSA have some 30-40 Krag brass.  Winchester and Remington, but Midway is out of the Winchester.

I think I'll order some 170 grain Cast bullets for these.

Later

Make sure you slug the bore you may need 303 brit bullets.  Before I changed barrels shooting 170 grain .308 diameter I could not hit a 16x20 sheet of paper twice in a row at 25 yards.  After rebarreling same bullets group under a quarter at 50 yards.

Also 170 grainers may have feeding issues, flat point and all.

Never loaded for the 30 40 but I have worked with the 170 Gr. lead bullets in an 03 Springfield.  I've never had anything but bad luck with the lighter bullets.  I would suggest something heavier 200 to 210 Gr., 210 is where I ended up with the 30.06.

Pitspitr

With the Krag magazine if the cartridge OAL isn't long enough it will jam. I hope Neiderlander will jump in here. He loads for me when he's loading for himself and his loads work well.

Drydock

I would not load much shorter than 2.8" oal.  Lots of folks have had problems with 150 grainers, mostly because they loaded too short to stack properly in the magazine.  The Krag will feed most anything you put in it, as long as you maintain oal.  For lead rounds heavier is better, keeps the velocity down and gives plenty of bearing surface.

Grafs, Midwayusa, Midsouth Shooters, Natchez reloading, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, Sportsmans Guide.  Try them all, someone (Usualy Grafs) has Krag brass.  Its seasonal, grab it when you see it.

I made the mistake of trying some 170gr 30-30 bullets in mine once, results were not good. They shot fine.....once I got them in the chamber. Short bullets, for some reason, let the Krag get "rim locked" Requires careful loaing of the magazine, and sometimes they still jam. If they're loaded to the proper length, you can just grab 5 in your hand and drop them in, they'll line up fine.

Texas Lawdog

Cow Town Scout, who is a member of GAF, is a good man to talk to on the reloading of ammo for the 30-40 Krag.

I found a little better price on brass here:

http://www.precisionreloading.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=PRE&Category_Code=BRASS_30-40_KRAG

But, I bought the last two bags of 50 they had.  They tell me they have more on order but had no idea when it may arrive.

For long range stuff I use montana bullet works gas checked 210 grainer (got the hot tip from Cow Town Scout). i push them to approx 2100 FPS like the original 220 grain load.  With a new barrel .309 or .310 does not seem to matter.
I did have good luck with the 170 grainers from this new barrel but did load them long and not crimped into the groove.

Niederlander

I've loaded Lyman's 210 grain round nose for years now.  I use an overall length of 3.062", and I've never had a failure to feed with my Krag, and I don't think Jerry has either.  I use a load of 13 grains of Trail Boss for steel targets, and I've never had an issue with my loads failing to take down a target.  Just a real user-friendly load.
