I tried something new yesterday, we're getting quite a few flys around the barn, so I set up a board with white paper
and a few drops of syrup on it. I then set up my cross sticks at 50 feet and zeroed in my low wall .22 with Eley target
ammo. Once the fly finds the syrup they stay there and POW a dead fly. I then tried my Stevens 44 1/2 with the original
4x scope and found it wasn't clear enough to see that small of target at that range. The low wall has a modern air rifle
scope on it, and I set it at 10x and focused it and it worked very well. My wife thinks I'm nuts (not the first time), but it's
very good practice on how well your gun, scope, ammo, and your shooting ability work together.

Bear Tooth Billy, We use to go down below the paper mill, just past the dam on the Ohio River. We would set a paper board up and wait for the horse flys. Then we would shoot them with Ruger 22 pistols. It was a lot of fun. Have to hold a Ruger 22 real steady to pick those horse flys off. Tj  :D

That was years ago. can't even get on that site anymore, guards every where.  Times change.

Bro. TJ, That sounds like a lot of fun, I would rather shoot Mosquitos than flies.

Shooting mesquitoes off your arm with a .22 might not be too practical.  LOL

Yes..use the pistols. Good practice in case you need to drive railroad spikes at an NCOWS match someday!

I have always wanted to recreate the scene with Jack Lemon and Glenn Ford sitting in the bathtub, shooting cockroaches off of the wall.

I have acquired some plastic roaches; but I don't think they will survive very many hits with a .45.

I know where I can get a bathtub... maybe you will have to use paper cockroachs..or you could get a few roaches and they will multiply, and by next year National you will have enough..  ;D

Reminds me I used to shoot grasshoppers, dragon flys, etc. in the air with 44-40 blanks.

I used to shoot Cicada Killers with my .22, loaded with shot shells.  When I was a kid* those things scared the hell out of me; and you had to get close with a rifle or the shot would go around them.

I don't remember where, but I've heard of using ketchup packets from fast food joints stapled to a board for "cockroaches"

Forty Rod

Smooshin' flies is an ancient and honored sport.

I remember using a CO2 powered pistol with no BBs to catch them on the counter top or shelf fronts in a gun shop where I once worked.  The gas jet would smoosh 'em out to about four feet, but beyond that it would just move them across the room so you could take another crack at them later.

.222s were a lot of fun out on the back of the barn, but my cousin and I found out a .45LC was overkill when we shot through the wall and put ahole in one of Uncle Frank's electric milking machines.

If I remember right it was very expensive, about five weeks worth of expensive.

Pitspitr, I shot the ketchup packs with my pocket pistol somewhere. It was fun. Tj

Steel Horse Bailey

Sounds like a Hoot!

When I was in Germany working at the Hotel Gasthof Turmwirt, my friend Georg (German spelling of George) had a nice air rifle (an Anschutz or Mauser IF  I remember correctly.) There were always flies on the wall of the building directly across the street, about 45-50 feet away.  I used to take potshots at them.  I hit more than I missed.  I always knew when I hit if the little black spec I aimed at didn't disappear after I shot.)  There was also a side entrance that was within range around the side that had a gutter that didn't drain completely (it sagged a bit) over the door, so there was always water in it.  One day, several of my friends were over there lounging around, smokin' & jokin' and wasting time.  I got out Georg's trusty air rifle and whenever one of them would get close to the door, I'd hit the standing water with a pellet from the VERY quiet airgun.  The water would splash several feet in all directions, which would cause them to look up and try to figure out HOW they got splashed from above.  I kept that up for about 10 minutes one afternoon.  It was loads of fun and didn't hurt anyone, but they sure were puzzled ... and they NEVER figured it out!  Actually, this is the first time I've ever told anyone about this little joyful prank I did back during the summer of 1970!

;)  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D
