My Good Rick ...

how can I say this ....
                                             "your hole is too big"

with the hole in the antler so large, a tang that short, and neither the bolster or the antler flat and square you are
liable to have the blade come loose & fall out no matt4r what glue you use  :'(  .

But all hope is not lost - If it were me I would
- weld, braze , oir silver solder a longer steel rod onto that tang,
- then use a drill bit a hair larger than the rod and continue the hole in the antler thru to the butt (crown)
- use  a thin brass disk on both the pommel side and the bolster side and lots and lots of JB Weld (mainly cuz it's grey)
- once thouroughly cure, peen the end oif the rod sticking out of the pommel end and file smooth.

Well i do like pie, baaa haaa haaa..

Idea sounds good, but the antler will have a curve, but maybe drill one end and then the other to meet it.?The one i used i'm practicing on,i have a better one in the grudge ;D

Rick,

Or you could do the lazy man's way .... fill that hole with epoxy ... wait until it is about half cured .... and lower the knife tang into it ... do it slowly and have a brush to take off all the extra epoxy ... and hold it the five minutes while the glue sets ... be sure to keep the knife vertical even after the epoxy sets ...

with a piece that short it could work, and bend the new tang to match, gently force it in and add epoxy

Or bend a rod to match the curve, heat the end red hot, and burn your way thru!
better do it waaaaay outside and downwind from the house.

You don't want to drill all the way through your crown. That ruins the look of having a crown stag handle.

Weld a piece of all thread on the end of the tang and anneal so the tang doesn't snap. Sand the end of the antler flat. Use acra-glas to fill the hole and attach the handle. Then drill a proper size hole in the side all the way through the antler and all thread rod and glue a pin in. Then sand and polish the pin smooth with the rest of the handle.

You could use a brass pin or whatever material you want. Between having the all thread to grip the epoxy and the pin through the whole mass it will not come apart.

This is one of my Scagel knives, notice the polished brass pin in the handle.

Quick way to build a Man Cave - Heat to red hot and burn that antler in the Kitchen.  Let sit for one hour.  By then most self respecting women will be packed and headed home to Mom.

After one hour if the little woman asks about that smell,  just tell her its the newest Mans potpourri, or essence of Man if you prefer.

So far so good, what is the best epoxy?I had some dupont but it's not worth a dern! Drilled a smaller hole on this piece and got it even.I used another batch of Dupont,i know i'm gettin the mix right,50 50,it just doeswn't want to set right, never had that problem before.I'll see by morning how it does.I'm going to paint the antler too, black, then maybe steel wool the nubs with some copper dots on the side..

It looks good just the way it is now ... I would guess with the paint and copper it is gonna be gorgeous!

Can't wait to see it!

Rick, instead of painting it black use a very thin brown wash of flat finish water based acrylic paint.  Wipe it on and immediately wipe it off.

Might take several coats let it dry between coats), but it works very well and gives a very authentic "antique" or "weathered" look.  Once thoroughly dry it's permanent.  Costs about 69 cents at Michaels.

Rick, potassium permanganate mixed with water to dye the stag.

I dye the stag before putting it on the knife, after sanding and shaping you get the contrasting look. You can still dye it after you put it together.

Paint will look like......well....paint. This dye will make the stag look natural before it bleached out.

I keep a mason jar full in the shop that I drop the stag pieces in. It's purple looking and you think it's ruined but when it dries it turns a dark brown. Let it soak for a while if you want it real dark.

I recently finished this one and it was the same color as your handle before I soaked it in potassium permanganate. Then I sanded the brow tine knob off of the crown and shaped it to the guard and left the contrast.

You can find it at some of the knife making suppliers and probably can get it on ebay or something. A couple bucks will probably buy you a lifetime supply.
