OK, what KNIFE do you carry with your '76?

Just thinking of the whole outfit now. Many of you pack a six-gun with your rifles. How about a knife appropriate to the period 1876-1890 or so?

Hey Bill, hate to see these orphan posts, so just thought I'd say that although I have a box full of old timey knives, the one I'm packing right now is the Bark River Special Hunting Knife which is a copy of a knife first put out by Will and Fink of San Francisco.

Bark River has also just re-introduced their Rogue Bowie which is about as authentic a bowie as you'll ever find.

Good luck.

Carry also the Bark River Special Hunting knife, not so happy with the shead.
But have also a Green River knife, beautyfull shead made by Karla.
I don't like huge big knifes. For me smaller ones will due the trick.

Also, in this period, the huge big fitting knifes, are more of the past, because of the more reliable cartridge guns.

Karla has great sheads for Green river knifes. Check her out at Purdy Gear.

Thanks fellas. I had not heard of Bark River, so will fix that right off. I put a message in to Chuck Burrows of Wild Rose Trading, and he promptly sent a detailed response with photos from the 1870s period of mostly Green River-style butcher blades hafted in wood or horn and carried in large, Indian-inspired beaded and tooled sheaths. He agree the various bowies from the English factories in Sheffield would also have been very heavily represented.

You do know there's an entire forum dedicated to period knives here on CAS City, don't you?

It's called 'The Cutting Edge'...

There have been thread after thread on original knives posted - and many, many, many links to suppliers and bladesmiths.

Thanks St. George. I had missed that forum completely!

:o

Bark River makes some nice stuff, fellas. The Special Hunting Knife has a lovely blade on it, although I could do without the micarta handles. Also really like their version of the Nessmuk.
And Karla at Purdy Gear sure knows how to have her way with a piece of leather!

Yep, the GR knives are truly authentic and are very good working tools as well. I have several and have used them on game with good success. If you are at all handy, Track of the Wolf carries scale blanks in horn and various woods.

As to the micarta on the special hunting knives, that would be an immediate turn off for me as well. The one I got has antiqued stag horn handles and looks really nice and PC. I also made my own sheath for it which makes the package fit my needs to a T. I'd love to post a pic of it for ya, but I'm computer stoopid.

Grizzly Adams

Just finished this Bowie up.  Goes well with my original Winchester 1876 Short Rifle in 45-75.
