Im considering buying this carbine, but have never shot one before. Everyone compares it to the recoil of a 30-06, haven't shot one of those either. But have owned a 270, 300 win mag and 3 1/2" shotgun, what is it close too? I don't mind recoil but like to shoot and don't want something I can only do 5 rounds at a time. I regularly shoot a box or two of skeet with my metal buttplate coach gun with no issues, 2 3/4" shells, is this similar?

The 45/70 recoil is under your control. A carbine load of 405 grain slug and 55 grains of 2fg is a pleasant one but the same rifle with a 500 grain slug and 70 grains will be stout . Then go to 400 grain jacketed with heavy smokeless and you'll be hurting right away! Your 2 3/4" 12 gauge is a good reference to normal loads. Also bench shooting is rougher on a fellow then standing as you surly know. Buy it and enjoy.

I'd only be using factory smokeless ammo, so Im guessing 300 grain rounds are best for reasonable loads?

Don't throw out your fired cases! You might need them when you discover the joys of shooting more for the same budget. 8)

I did some calculations on recoil for a 8# rifle. The 300 grain Winchester load (1810 FPS) came up to 22.57# of free recoil and the 405 grain Winchester load (1330 FPS) gives 19.1# of free recoil. The sights are more likely to be regulated to 405s. And indeed save them cases!

In my personal experience only, factory (low pressure) ammo in a carbine is mildish.
