Howdy.
Have just made two civil war cap pouches. A friend of mine made the mould for me.

Can we see the mold?

Why are there two flaps, presumably to stop caps falling out, but how does that work?

Nice.

Nice job!  They turned out great.

Massive - you answered your question on the two flaps - inner flap is to keep the caps from falling out.  From my own experience, if you don't have the inner flap, which folds down tight over the opening when the outer flap is secured in place, caps can easily fall out when you take your belt off, lay it down, etc.  In the early 60s, I bought a cap pouch that was made by a small leather company in Detroit to use in shooting NSSA. It only had the outer flap - had the sheepskin on the inside like the originals though.  After use, it became worn enough with fastening and unfastening the flap that it  wouldn't shut tight over the pouch.  Whenever I removed my leathers and laid them down, I would loose caps - and these were the large 4 wing musket caps.

BHB, is this the pattern and mold from Jim Simmon's Pattern? I am getting ready to build the same style pouch from his pattern and am cutting the pieces for the mold today.

Boothill Bob

Is there somewhere I could find the pattern myself?

Thx, Bro Tim

Tim, Double K leather sells the pattern http://www.doublekleather.com/index.php/shop-online/educational/patterns/gun-leather. Or you can go over to leatherworker.net and locate Jim Simons over there and ask him. He has been posting several of his patterns on the patterns forum including his Cavalry holster and pommel bag and holster.
