Well ....... I've been following threads on the Forum about guns for some of our thread pardners, and decided I needed to dabble in Cap Guns.  Different cap guns.  Not a Problem says I.  Except ...... I suffer from Hair Brained Schemes.  I also like to play with somewhat "different" guns.  Most of which I have to build.
I wanted a pair of Avenging Angels.  A friend of mine was selling a pair, but before I could glom onto 'em, Slowhand Bob beat me to 'em.  So:
Saw a really neat pair from Dixie Gun Works, .44 Cal Pietta 1851s.  .44 1851s never existed (so what).  With Thunderer Grip Frames, they were just plain KOOL!!  Bought a pair.  Now I have cap guns, need caps, powder, Slixshot cones, round balls and a loading stand, 'cause the Angels don't have a rammer.  This dabble in cap guns is starting to get expensive.  But Wait .... If you call right now .... Your Hair Brained Scheme can ......... get worse.
What if ..... we could swap to 1860 grip frames, and an 1860 Barrel w/rammer and have spare cylinders??  Whowa, way KOOL .......
And what if ...... we added Conversion Cylinders and Ejector assemblies for the 1860 Barrels, cut to the length of the Ejectors ......... (we may have something here) ::)
So ...... lets buy some parts ........
I always tell my customers, who have Hair Brained Schemes (like mine) it's gonna cost you twice as much as you think it is :o
It does ......
So the cheapest way to get 1860 grip frames, a barrel assembly and spare cylinder, is to buy an 1860, keep the parts you need for said Hair Brained Scheme and throw the rest of the 1860 away (save all the screws).
Then we discover, the Conversion Cylinders and Ejector assemblies have rendered the spare cylinders, the Slixshot cones and the Loading Stand Redundant.  Oh Boy.
So what have we accomplished.  Well, our dabble into cap guns didn't last long (the guns haven't even arrived yet) but the project has cost about $1,050 bucks (per gun), not counting loading stand, cones, caps, round balls, capper and ...........
I didn't include the the expense of the Smith to put all this stuff together, 'cause the Smith is ......... me.
I've been retired for the last year and a half.  And now ....... I think I have to go back to work (sob).
Oh, and did I mention, I actually bought 4 cap guns???

Isn't the game we play FUN

Ah, yes.....the Law of Unintended Consequences rears its head again!   ;)

My venture into cap guns started with a pair of Dragoons being sold by a friend - such a deal I couldn't pass up!  Of course, all the accoutrements you mentioned are required.

Next, I bought a pair of 1858 Remingtons on sale cheap from Cabela's- I liked the cap guns, but the darn Dragoons are too big to shoot duelist!

The cheap Remingtons left something to be desired, so then I bought a pair of stainless Ruger Old Army's!  That, of course, required a new leather rig to tote them around and use them efficiently.

Now, $3,000 later, I have my ideal cap gun set! :o

BB,

You ain't done yet!!  You don't have a set of 1860s or 1851s.  Go back to Cabelas ........ SOON.  Your pistol deprivation can result in BLINDNESS!!   Or going BALD.  Or getting Fat(er?).  Do not delay.  And if you call RIGHT NOW we will double your order and you just pay shopping and handling  ;D  ;D

PS:  Be sure to try Slixshot cones.  A real treat  ;)]

Just in case you fellers didnt know, there is an official medical term for this condition. It is called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder aka: OCD. I was diagnosed with this many years ago. Look it up in the books, it is real my pards. Sadly, there is no cure, one can only hope to contain the symtoms of this condition with years of counseling. However, the good news it that I have found that frequent firearm and/or historical clothing purchases can slow the progression of this life altering syndrome. Bear in mind, that when you dabble into the cap gun varient of this illness, it quickly gets financially life threatening. The 1860 turns into a pair, then a pair of '51 Navies, couple of Remington, a Walker or two. then................this can only be followed by (gasp) a Spencer and probably a Henry. In the most extreme of cases, I have seen purchases of Gatling Guns and/or cannons!!!! You should divest yourself of said carriers of the illness (the dreaded cap guns) before it gets worse. I will (under duress) take them off your hands lest you get sicker. I will, in turn, do my part to rid the offending items of the germ of this disease by constantly filling the barrels with thick smoke and hot lead, which is the only way to negate the detrimental elements of the horrific OCD illness.

OCD huh ?  and you say " Sadly, there is no cure, one can only hope to contain the symtoms of this condition with years of counseling"

lets see in one hand you have "years of counseling"  the means $$$$ to a Annalist
or on the other hand use the money you would blow on a quack for counseling and buy GUNS....

Lefty Dude

Yes, it is a terrible Sickness, God Help us All. The only cure is more Black Powder and BP weapons of our choice. ;D

I started out with One now I have many.

Mean Bob Mean

It is an illness.  I have too many pistols and I too am looking at Cap and Ball revolvers.  1860s and 1851s alike.  God help me.

Opps, you have spotted the loophole here. We should be careful that our "financial counselors" do not become aware of this blatant misuse of the mental health profession. We used to hold "cowboy confession" night wherein, we would carefully examine everyone's level of sickness. they finally gave me a pass since it was clear that there was no help for me.

I just walked through Cabelas in Reno......Bad Idea.  There was a reason I only brought $20, instead of the $300 I was intending.  Had I brought more, I would now be in the possession of a brandy-new Colt '60 with some various nick-nacks...... So for the moment, I'm stuck with the Remmie and a '51.    Soon to be remedied I hope.  ;)
