Hi all

I use magtech brass and want to load slug. The grounds I shoot over doesn't permit the use of plastic wads - not a problem with shot as I use Circle Fly fibre wads - but all of the research I've done says to place the slug in the cup of a plastic wad.

The only thing I can think of is paper patch to bring the slug up to bore/case i.d., I paper patch for my various Sharps but I don't fancy doing it for slug!  :o

Anybody out there load slug without using plastic, or cunning ideas?

Cheers

Get a slug mold that drops slugs that fit your bore.  Use the same fiber wads you use for shot.

The Lyman Foster slug mold casts at .705 and the sabot slug at .681 (I have the Foster). I believe the Lee is about the same. They're all designed to fit into the cup of a plastic shot wad. Short of having a custom one made bore riding slugs don't seem to be available. Plus, unlubed, that's an awful lot of lead coming in contact "dry" to the full length of the barrel

How about putting a hollow base slug on a mandrel and whacking it to size it up to fit the bore and then filling the base with bullet lube and loading the slug on top of an over shot wad?

Good idea, I'll give it a try

Accurate Molds has several 12 gauge molds in their catalog.

Thanks, they have a good range. I'll contact them.

I measured some slugs made with a Lee mould I had sitting on my desk, they run 0.682" - 0-685" if that's any help.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

Once you get a slug that fits your bore, give it a bath in Lee's Liquid Alox.  That will prevent any leading, and I would also use wads dipped or soaked in melted Black Powder Lube to keep your fouling soft.

Have fun and be safe.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Even if you cut the petals off the wad and just leave the cup, you should be good to go.
