Hi y'all, quick question.  Does anyone know the specs for the old .46 Rimfire? i.e. powder volume, bullet diameter, case length etc.

All I got, from Cart's of the World: Remington load-227gr bullet, 20grns powder, Winchester load-230gr bullet, 26grns powder.

Bullet .456
neck .458
base .458
rim .530
case .836
ctg. oal 1.336

There were also a short, a long for rb rifles and an extra long for the Ballard rifle loaded by Remington.

Adirondack Jack's Cowboy 45 Special closely emulates the .46 Rem.  If you get stuck for a modern cartridge that can maybe be made to work, give the C45Spl a look.

Unfortunately the brass is no longer made.

It will be.  This was a good selling enough product that someone will pick it up.  Meanwhile, many thousands of rounds exist.

I sent an email to Starline and asked them where I can buy some C45Spl brass.  I'll wait to see what they say.

45. special? I haven't heard of that one before.   So are y'all ready to hear my reasoning for needing this info?   Here it is.  I'm trying to come up with a load that is close to the old .46 Rimfire by cutting/resizing some modern centerfire brass and create a conversion to go with that load.  Probably won't work, but hey, worth a shot(or six).  BTW. what is the diameter on the 44-40?

Howdy Trinity,

Walt Kirst has already done the work for you.  His Kirst Konverter for the 58 Remington is range ready now.  The Cowboy 45 Special brass has more or less dried up.  AJ sold about a half a million pieces and then his health gave out.  Esentially this is exactly the brass you're looking for in a central fire design.  It has the same head as 45 Colt (not 45 ACP) but the same internal volume and shape as 45 ACP from the base up.  You use 45 ACP dies and a 45 Colt shell holder to load it.

Really?  I knew about the Kirst, but, not the 45 Special being so close.  Oh well, that happens with entrepreneurship.  I'll think of something else....

Ah Amigo!!!! You can make .45 Cowboy Special brass yerownself! Simply cut down .45 Colt brass to .45ACP length and inside ream the "neck" area and you've got it. It's tedious, but doable! I've got 50 rounds of it that I made and it works great in my 75 Remmies.

It also works well to load 45 S&W (Schofield).  It is shorter than 45 Colt so needs less powder.  The rim will fit in the Conversion cylinders, except some of the older R&D.  I opened up my older R&D rim cuts with a17/32 endmill to accept 45 Schofield.

You might also make 45 Special from 45 Schofield.  I imagine with the right cutter and setup you might make 45 Special from Auto Rim on a lathe..

I use a Kirst conversion in my Remmie. Sometimes the reloaded long colt cases with my preferred Buffalo Bros 250 grn .454 lead slug and 35 gr, 2F makes the OAL a little to long for it. I have some schofields that I reload, but only 50. I have found the hornady leverevolution shells to be shorter than the standard colt. I use them for deer season, and have been saving them with good success for a shorter shell without trying to find schofields.
