Just checked  mine and it measures 1 in 22.5.  I would have thought it had a slower twist for 300 grainish bullets?

Howdy Roosterman,I have only checked twist rate on my Winchester 1876 .45-75 wcf original ,dont have a Uberti. The twist rate on my rifle look's to be rite at 1" in 20" and the 45-75 uses a 350 grn. bullet I would think that the most common weight  bullet for a 45-60 is 300 grn. your twist rate close to 1" in 22.5" should be real close to perfect . Just my two cents ,and that's only worth two cents ..........Dusty.

Been searching around and found the twist for an original '76 in 45-60 is 1 in 26, which is what i'd put in a gun for shooting a 300gr bullet. My Uberti doesn't shoot a 300gr worth a crap, but it does love 405's. I need to look for a 385 with a flat nose that may give me a little more case capacity. Currently with a 405 I can get 53grs.KIK in it with out compression. I have yet to shoot these 405's with BP, but I suspect they'll do as well or better than my smokeless loads with this bullet which are excellent.
I guess I have myself convinced that a 1 in 22 twist is too fast for 300gr bullets......my targets have proven it time and again.... :-\

Roosterman be sure and tell us how the 405's work with that bp. Have you ever tried the 350 grn. bullets ,just may be the ticket . I use 405's in me 45-70 1886 Winchester it likes em and is plenty accurate with them . Good Luck......Dusty

I'll have to find some 350's and give them a try. I'm thinking my 53grs. of KIK and the 405 may be a little anemic. What say you fellows? It's going to be a little while befor the weather straightens out for any serious shooting to find out.

It took me months to get my 76 Uberti in 45-60 to shoot any good with a 300 or 292grn LFP.

I use SR4759 and it shoots as good as I can shoot it.

A friend who has the same gun shoot 300 gas checked bullets in his, it was the only way he could get it to shoot a group.

We both have the Mounty gun but in 45-60.

I use 24gr SR4759 in my 405 loads and it is very accuate. I tried it with 300's with little success. How many grains are you shooting for your 300gr. load?

FWIW, Uberti data lists the 45-60 twist rate as 1:20.  http://cimarron-firearms.com/bore-groove-twist

+1  This would appear to be the answer........ ;)

Not to disagree, but I actually measured mine and it's 1 in 22.5. There seems to be some discrepancy in Uberti's printed material and actual reality. No big deal either way as both twists are unsuitable.
What the real issue here is the fast twist rate in these guns and the expectation that they will shoot 300-350gr bullets. The originals had a 1 in  26 (reportedly) which would be far better for lighter bullets
I have read several people here rave about the accuracy of their Chapparal guns. Maybe they have the correct twist.
Possibly my expectations of accuracy are goofy.

Grapeshot

My Chiappa '76 in .45-60 has a one in twenty twist rifled barrel.  It shoots 405 grain boolits very well and if I don't reduce the charge to 55 grains (Compressed) it kicks like a mule with its cresent butt plate.

I just bought an Uberti .45-60 "Cross Fire Trail" carbine and it shoots as well if not better than the 26 inched Chiappa with either the 405 grain or 350 grain bullets.

These were done with a 405 grain Lee RNFP boolit over 11.4 grains of Unique and lit off by a Remington Magnum Large Rifle Primer in WW brass.

Any of you ever thought of the 405grns. hollow base for the 45-60?
It was the choise for the Trapdoor carabine back then, why not in the 45-60..?
Just got to think of it, I have it so I will try it out and let yaàll know how it does.
Just got a lot to do with the rifle first!

Grapeshot

I found that I get better accuracy with the HB 405's.  The old cavalry load of 55 grains of musket powder and a 405 grain Hollow Based soft lead bullet will fit in my .45-60 cases if I compress the powder with a compression die.  Using GOEX 2fg I get all my rounds to hit a 12 inch frying pan at 100 yards.  Of course the rate of twist on my Chappy is 1 in 20 inches.

Grapeshot, are you running any kind of wad under the Lee HB? What lube are you using?
