this is not conventional army. I guess you could say I'm an unReconstructed Confederate that I ...ahem...found on a dead Union officer out west.  Cartridge guns are a lot nicer than our old ball and cap arms ;)   Any Bluecoat, U.S. Marshall or Scalawag wants me, they can come and get me ;)

VERY NICE!  But, hey! The War has been over for at least 12 years, if that's a M1873 Springfield Carbine, with a M1877 short-wrist, long comb stock (field replacement??? or part of the 1879 recall of under-50,000 S/N). That could have turned up anywhere. The only other thing to mark it as U.S. issued equipment is that Benicia Arsenal Dyer pouch on your belt!  ;)  Your .45-55-405 or .45-70-405 ammo is all civilian-grade with external primers. And, anyhow, you might have signed on with the QM Dept. at some Western post, and were issued the carbine, and then "lost" it, and had the cost deducted from your pay. Same with the Dyer pouch. The belt and holsters could have been made up for you by the Saddler Sgt. at the post.  ;D
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

Trailrider,
