Back in '79 Sam Elliott stared along with Tom Selleck in a movie called the "Sacketts". One of my all time favorite westerns...Elliott played "Tell Sackett" and carried a huge Bowie in a shoulder sheath...I've wanted to do one for a long time...
Here's Sam with his....

Mine is the version after he spent time with the friendly Indians....
15″ overall with 10″ sharp x 2″ deep....
Forged from a '40′s Rio truck spring on charcoal, hot filed, quenched in water...No electricity used..
Bolster poured from pewter and non-lead fishing weights....
Handle is from a big whitetail....
Sheath is rawhide deer over veg-tan with an egg tanned Elk cuff and fringe.....
Shoulder belt is from an old hunting bag I made and didn't like so it got its-self re-used...No dye on the sheath... dirt, grease and varnish with a few beads...

Kind of loses something with the 2013 attire but ya get the point....

A work in progress.

Very nice indeed! How long did it take you to make it?

Wow, well, when you need a buckler to carry it, it's a sword!

That is extremely cool, very nice work indeed.

Now that I like!  That is one of my favorite movies and they never seem to air it on tv.  The patina on the antler is really good; did you do anything specific to it?
Keep up the good work,  I enjoy your stuff.

Great looking knife!  I wish I had the time to learn how to forge.  It is on my bucket list.   I did a bronze spear and sword eons ago, but that is completely different beastie than steel.   Love the blade.  I love the look of the forging process.  Next time you dry shave some mouthy bar patron, make sure to use plenty of rotgut to ensure it does not get infected!

Thanks Gents, each and all....

QuoteHow long did it take you to make it?
About 4-5 hrs. hot cutting, forging, filing and heat treatment...Takes a while when you choose not to use electrical tools...
I'd guess 10-12 hours in the sheath...I do most of that stuff at night instead of turning the rest of my brain to jelly watching TV....Plus I done the rawhide and tanned the hide....

QuoteThe patina on the antler is really good; did you do anything specific to it?
I boiled it with fat for a yellowish look (Thanks Chuck Burrows), rubbed in my grease/pine pitch/beeswax/compost dirt finish and hung it in the barn window for a couple of months....
Thanks again.....Randy

Hi,

I had been hoping someone else would post this, but he wore the same knife in a movie called "the Quick and the Dead" No, not the one with Sharon Stone ...  the one with Tom Conti and  Kate Capshow ... Okay: I'll admit it: I am a REAL Sam Elliot fan!

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

Yessir Mr. Ellis, that also is a great movie and harder to find than the "Sacketts"

That's a wonderful piece of usable art.  Fancy enough to be eye-catching, rough enough to mean business.  I love it!   (That's yours-- although his isn't bad either.  Yours just has more character.)

That's definitely one of a kind, . . . and a good kind at that.

Forging is one of those "bucket list" things for me too, . . . just don't know when.

May God bless,

For those who are looking to see either "The Sacketts" or the Elliot "The Quick and The Dead," you can find them on Netflix.
