I'm doing research for a novel and I want to get the details right.

The holsters of one particular character were made in Texas during the Post Civil War years.

I'm looking for a short list of authentic designs.

Hey HArley,
Look for a copy of Packing Iron by Ratenbury.   You can probably get it through a library.  I has loads of pictures and I remember one being specifically from texax in that time frame.

I was trying to get a holster made in San Antonio by Carvajal and went through an original 'Carvajal Catalog' from the 1880s. Every holster that I recall seeing was some kinda 'Mexican' Loop Holster. Most had 2 loops. All of'm showed some kinda tooling on the holster body and on the face of the Loop(s).
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Some still had thier flap holsters and would cut the flap off.. :)

It  was more in the 1880s that the Mexican loop became the norm and in Texas they often had one loop and a short skirt.

Shotgun Franklin - that catalog sounds fascinating - any way of seeing it online?

Skeeter Lewis, I had gone to their shop to have a holster made. One of the Carvajal's drug out an old stack of their catalogs and told me to look through'm. I checked, and asked about'm. They were the exact same catalogs they had kept setting around since the 1800s. They still used them, but not those prices. There were all kinds of catalogs including saddles and tack, gun leather and even 1800s Military leather gear. Some years back they shut down their place in San Antonio and moved to Floresville, I do not know the fate of those catalogs or if they are available online?
BTW, they were so busy with orders from Ft Sam Houston that I never did get a holster made by them.

Yelp lists them as closed.  Sad.

Wonder what became of the catalogs and any patterns?
