How to use a Vernier Iron Sight on a 45-70 falling block
« on: October 03, 2005, 12:38:13 PM »

A request from a visitor in Cas City:

Quote
Sirs,

Could one of you gentlemen explain how to use the Vernier Iron Sights I have
for my 45-70 BPCR? I understand, to some extent, the 1/2 clicks on my AR-15
but I am at a loss for minute of angle and the movement of the dial on the
rear Vernier sight. How much do you move the rear sight up in order to raise
the point of impact 1/2", 1 " or 6 "?

I have searched the Web and cannot find directions to useing the sight for a
TOTAL BEGINNER like myself.

Thanks,

Bobby

In simple terms it ain't that simple.  The marks works like a vernier calipers, it is a measurement of the length of the sight.  What amount it moves the impact of the bullet, depends on the round, the velocity and bullet weight of the round and even the length of the barrel.  There is not really a simple answer.

For most folks trial and error at know ranges will help one learn how to adjust the sight.  Most of the old timers kept notes as to load and range, the vernier makes know settings with known ranges and known loads repeatable.

Del is on the right track, it is a lot of trail and error, I don't have my range book in front of me but I can tell you that no two days or pages are the same, once you figure out your basic settings with the load you are going to use it can be a lot of fun.

I suggest you check out:  long range BPCR.com they have some good info there.

I keep tellin' pards that them marks are for reference.  I sight in at 100-200-300 etc and record the mark numbers. THEN understand that heat, humidity load etc etc play a roll.

THAT WHAT MAKES IT A CHALLENGE AND FUN  ;D  Know your rifle and settle on one load.

I see too many pards try to compete with a load for this and a load for that -- forget it...
