Lawdog,  The be the Cattlemen's Roadhouse and it is just north of the Super 8. Major 2, the "light on" thing is for Motel 6. Super 8 just gives you a key and lets you run amuck.  Great place to stay BTW.

"Leave the light on"  is a quite a bit deeper than the current slogan for the Motel Chain  they did not coin it

I'll will give you overview here....

There is a saying , that that has to do with the parable "Prodigal Son" (children)  
It has to do with, as they make their way in the world , parents will always "leave a light on"

I've heard it refering to traveling friends or relitives as well... "we'll leave a light on for you" ( maybe where the MOTEL 6 slogan came from )


 Next , I come from a theatre background, so I always heard...

"leave a Light on "  or always leave a light burning in an empty theatre.
Traditionally, the light is placed upstage center. A wise safety feature to save someone from falling into the orchestra pit.
The superstition is it wards off ghosts.   Failure to provide this may anger them.
There is also the superstition to say to an actor " Break a leg "  ( it means good luck )
