OK, I'm deep in my research, working on ways to make coffee in the 19th Century, there are some good, there are some that are bad, but this one is a a definite no.

But I thought I would show it, just in case anyone here likes really bad tasting coffee.

(BTW the fish skin here is not a cowboy yellow slicker, but a real piece of fish skin used to settle the grounds, and after boiling that long they are going to need settled.)

The "peas roasted and ground" might be an interesting experimental archeology project. Wonder what the caffeine content, if any, would be?

There would be none, I'm collecting some of the recipes for the coffee substitutes used during the time with the help of a friend who is a Colonel in a CSA unit.   May haul the 8 cup pot around this summer and get some opinions on them.

Have you got a recipe for period instant coffee called Extract of Coffee? If not the recipe can be found here:

I've made several batches of it, and it is pretty tasty.

Del,

Speaking of PC things I've no desire to do; I was perusing the Household Cyclopedia published in 1881. In the medical section it lists symptoms of diabetes; one of which was "urine sometimes is sweet to the taste."

I think I'd have to leave the urine tasting to medical professionals.

Being a Dr back then would have involved more than house calls.

That test was written about by the classical Greek doctors, and is probably a lot older than that.
